Question:
Is surgery safe for Type I diabetics?

I'm 26 and have been an insulin-dependent diabetic since I was 9 yrs. old. I'm about 5'6" and weigh about 260 lbs. I've been overweight all my life, but my weight gain is getting worse, especially in the past 2-3 years. I'm very insecure about it, and it's preventing me from living the kind of life I want to live. So, would this surgery be safe for me? --Thanks.    — [Anonymous] (posted on March 3, 1999)

I am type 1 diabetic and I had the surgery Feb 8. I used to take 6 shots a day equaling 150 units of insulin. I still take 3 shots a day and about 40-50 units of insulin. I am doing well, I do test my blood 5 times a day.
