Is surgery safe for Type I diabetics?

I'm 26 and have been an insulin-dependent diabetic since I was 9 yrs. old. I'm about 5'6" and weigh about 260 lbs. I've been overweight all my life, but my weight gain is getting worse, especially in the past 2-3 years. I'm very insecure about it, and it's preventing me from living the kind of life I want to live. So, would this surgery be safe for me? --Thanks.
