Question:
I hope this questions makes sense.. regarding protein and dumping
Hypothetically speaking: You decide you want some chinese food. Example Teriaki Chicken. Protein, but the sauce is sweet and/or sugary. You eat it, and dump. You run to the bathroom, because dumping makes you have go GO! So basically what you just ate went right through you. (end of scenerio) Would you still be able to count the protein? I know if you vomit, you can't count what you lose. What about the other way? Just curious. I don't know from personal experience. — Michelle J. (posted on February 4, 2004)

I think that you would be able to count that protein, that you went to the
bathroom and put out. It went through your intestines and that is
countable. Only if you throw up, do you not count the protein. Think
about it. The food is still absorbed.

Well, I have to say I never thought about this before. But as a nurse I
know that if it goes striaght thru you (as in what you described) it is not
in your intestine long enough to be absorbed. That takes a little time.

My Dr explained it like this: we do have to count it all. Dumping does
not mean that we don't absorb any of it, it simply means that sugar was
introduced in a concentration too high for the intestines, when that
happens, our body pulls all the water it can into the intestines and tries
to push it through to rid the body of the culprit. You still absorb a
portion of the energy you consumed. We don't know the portion absorbed,
but to un-complicate things, it's best to not double a dose because of
dumping. (My brother used the eat until you dump and eat again logic and
has gained by about 60 lbs. of the 115 he originally lost). We all make
mistakes and get sick on occaision, but don't replace what was maybe - or
maybe not - lost.
