Question:
Almost everytime I stand up, I get dizzy. Why?
I feel very dizzy when I go quickly from say a squatting position to standing. Sometimes I feel like I could black out! I'm pretty faithful on taking my vitamins. Though I haven't been able to continually get 50+ grams of protein. And I'm averaging between 55-60 oz. of liquid (water/crystal light/decaf coffee) a day. I'm trying really hard.. please don't raz me. I see the dr. tomorrow. — Michelle J. (posted on December 30, 2003)

Hi Michelle, I was having the SAME exact problem. I had my labs checked and
everything was ok- Since having WLS, my Blood Pressure is also often low-
My Dr. says this is why I get dizzy and to just get up slowly-

Same here-low blood pressure. For years and years, you could set your
blood pressure cuff at 110/70, now I am 90/50..kinda scary, but doc says
thats Ok and in fact better than high blood pressure. Dizziness can also
be caused by dehydration though so you may want to up the water for a while
too. Your doc should be able to tell you if you have low blood
pressure....

Hi Michelle,
I also have had the problem with the dizziness since I had my surgery in
Jan.2000 and I seem to get them mostly when I have a kidney infection but
sometimes I think it is due to blood pressure. Take it easy when you get up
out of a chair or up out of bed because the longer you sit or lay down that
changes your blood pressure, your blood pressure can change so fast due to
food you have eaten to the exercize you have been doing. Make sure your Dr.
checks your labs and keep an eye on your blood pressure to see if it is
going up and then dropping fast.

I'm pre-op ... but discovered a few months ago that I was dizzy too when
standing etc. Went to the doctor to learn that my blood pressure was way
to low 100/50 .. 90/50. I was able to cut my BP meds in half which
eliminated one completely. I had lost 46 lbs and was exercising almost
every day. When I saw the doctor she said the two most common reasons for
dizziness is low blood pressure and/or dehydration. Hope you feel better
soon.

I am 4 1/2 months post-op and before surgery I had hypertension (high blood
pressure) and was on medication for it, acouple of days after I got home
from the hospital, I thought that I would pass out when I stood up, and the
doctor took me off of my medication. I have only had the dizziness one
other time since I have been off of my BP medication and my blood pressure
was 90/50 which is low, so now I have to watch out when I stand up. So you
may want to have your pcp start checking your BP, I have a machine at home
that I use, my insurance paid for it, but they are all different prices and
you can buy them at the pharamacy.

Dizzy as in things spinning around, or Lightheaded as in passing out? Since
WLS I've had so many bouts of lightheadedness that I can't even hope to
count them anymore. I'm come close to passing out upon standing. My blood
pressure has been as low as 80/40... I know it's wls as I've never had
lightheadness before.

lightheadedness has become part of my daily routine. Well, technically, I
haven't had too many problems in the past month, but before then, it was
awful. don't really know what was causing it. Could have been low blood
pressure, or possible dehydration. You might try uping your water to see
if that helps. You are getting the required amount it looks like, but
maybe your body is telling you that you need more.

you could be Anemic, I was found to be anemic about 8 months ago and I
ended up passing out hitting a cement floor, getting a concussion and
getting a blood transfusion, I would get yourself to your doctor and have
him/her check you for anemia, I am also on seizure meds too, which has
helped alot with my dizziness!! you should have a complete check-up!!!

For me it is due to my low blood pressure. It comes and goes. I will be
lightheaded evertime I stand up for a month or so, then go a month or so
w/o it, then it comes back. Nothing I eat or drink has any effect on it.
I've only actually passed out once, but come close to it ever time I stand.
Doctors have just told me to drink more, as it will raise my blood
pressure.

I'm 13 months post-op, and I too experience dizziness - not swaying,
circling though - and have had a number of tests to get to the bottom of
it. Our bodies have a natural reaction to standing up by increasing our
blood pressure and heart rate slightly so we DON'T fall over. We found that
my blood pressure and heart rate rise more dramatically, and that may be a
factor. And even though I drink water constantly all day, I'm also slightly
dehydrated. We're experimenting with increasing my water intake. So far I'm
not seeing much difference. I feel like since I've lost so much weight
(200+ lbs.) in just a little over a year, my body just needs time to catch
up with the dramatic changes. I'm interested to see so many others with
this same condition.

Low blood pressure. I get it frequently and I'm over 2 years post-op.
Stand up slower and you shouldn't have a problem.

I too say low BP. Mine was 90/60 at my last check up and my doc said that
is why I felt a little dizzy when I get up too fast. ~Sidney~ Open RNY
