Question:
Should I accept the date given, would have to put school on hold.
I'm a nursing student and I have medicaid, I just received approval with a tentative date for 04/02/03. I would have to drop out the rest of the semester to have surgery. What i'm afraid of is I wait to the end of the semester and my medicaid gets canceled for some reason before my surgery date. — deniece M. (posted on March 21, 2003)

Please dont put your semester on hold... School is very important and you
can request a different date from your Dr's office for surgery- Have it
done in the summer when school is finished.. Good luck...Laura

I would have the surgery NOW. you got the hard part done, the approval and
the date. That is just my thought. this is the best thing I have ever done
for myself. I also put school on hold. I will finish thin and me in my new
carrer much healthier. The decison in yours.

I think you should research the medicad cancelling your coverage or
approval. If that can happen, then I'd go have the WLS. If that never
happens, and you have approval valid for long enough to cover the end of
the semester then go for that. Receiving approval for a date and the
actual date may be two different things. Find out what your real scheduled
date is going to be. To me, your health is more important than school. So
if you are doing this for real health reasons it should be a higher
priority. If you are doing this to look cute in your clothes, (which at
some level we all are), then get your book-learning, in cause looks fade
and we all get old ;-)

It would depend on when the semester ended? If it ended the following
month- I would finsh school if your almost there (if you can wait) but if
you risk cancellation of medicaid- there is your answer- a semester can be
repeated!

Since all the red tape is done I would have surgery. Then when you go back
to school the next semester, you'll be physically able to do the clinicals
so much easier. Its a short break for a healthy life change.

Have you discussed this with your academic advisor? If you are taking a
class in sequence that would cause you to be a year behind in the program
then you might consider staying in. However, if you would be able to
withdrawal this quarter or maybe your instrucotrs could arrange for you to
take incompletes then go for it NOW. I found myself in the same situation.
My instructors were (are) great to work with and I'm taking Spring quarter
off. Although my program is more flexible than a nursing program I would
think. As for me, I was sick most of winter quarter and I figure even if I
put off surgery my body probably wouldn't tolerate the rigors of school and
work. In the end, DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO! School will always be there,
your health may not.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I don't feel like i'm missing too much
by stopping now the class started on 03/06/03 a little over 2 weeks ago(our
classes are Fast Foward). No classes to take during the summer next classes
start in August 03. My online socialogy, so that should not be a problem.
