Question:
TX resident and need help with insurance issues
I am currently insured through my husband's employer through American Medical Security. I was wondering if anyone has ever gotten approved for the surgery, who was insured by this company. I was denied because it was excluded in the policy. I have been trying to get individual coverage, but everyone that I find is medically underwritten and they deny me coverage because of my height and weight. I can't seem to get coverage anywhere. I have tried to get a loan, but my credit is shot and no one will approve me for a loan. Does anyone have any ideas? I am desparate. I have done all the pre-op testing, I just have to come up with the money. — Leah R. (posted on November 3, 2002)

If it is excluded in your husband's company's insurance policy, take it up
with your husband's employer. Find out who puts together the contracts and
go to them -- not the insurance company. Try and get them to make an
exception for you. Sell it to them -- the cost of having you on the plan
with all your comorbidities and treatments vs. the cost of the surgery and
long term savings. I've heard of people fighting it this way and winning.

Leah, I don't know too much about it but I've heard some others that live
here talk about Texas Rehab Commission?? I think that's what it is
called.
I've seen stuff mentioned about getting assistance with the surgery but I
don't
know what the qualifications would be.....you could try looking in the
phone book
government pages or if you don't already belong. There is a group on Yahoo
that I belong
to called Dallasites. It is a group of people in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area
that have had
or are planning to have this type of surgery. Good Luck with your journey.
You can e-mail
me privately if you have any other questions. :-)
