Question:
Anyone out there with IBS?
I was diagnosed with IBS several years ago and am on medication. Today I had my first consult (a milestone!!) with the surgeon and he recommended doing a Lap Band procedure vs. a lap RNY. Was anyone here diagnosed with IBS prior to an RNY and after surgery, did it affect your IBS one way or the other? I am not sure my insurance will cover the lap band, so we may end up doing the RNY anyhow. Thanks for your help! — L. Nichols (posted on August 19, 2002)

Yes, dx at age 36, and had my RNY (distal) at age 44. IBS was gone, poof.
Either I never had it & it was lactose intolerance for all those years,
OR WLS cured it.

Hi there :) I was DX with IBS as a young teenager (I'm now 24). My surgeon
was well aware that I had it, and I believe it even went on the list of
co-morbitities to the ins. company. I was on Lomotil 2.5 mg. as needed, but
I have yet to use it at almost 11 weeks post-op. Just as another posted
stated...POOF, it's gone. When I tell you I had horrible bowels, I mean it.
Some unfortunate accidents at work and everything. All of a sudden, it's no
problem at all. I had open-RNY and it's been no problem. I've also never
heard of anyone suggesting the lap-band due to IBS, I would get a second
opinion. Best of luck.

I had IBS for 15 years prior to my RNY. It disappeared completely as of
the day of surgery, and that's been 29 months ago. It must have something
to do with the area of bowel that is bypassed. I can't imagine that a
lap-banding procedure would effect IBS since the procedure only limits the
volume of food ingested, not the metabolism or absorption of the food that
is taken in. Good luck!

I have had IBS since my early teens. I still have episodes, but they are
VERY few and far between. Probably because I am not eating NEARLY as much
and maybe because I don't drink milk anymore.

It's only been 4 1/2 months since my surgery but all my symptoms of IBS are
GONE now! No more cramping, running to the bathroom, gas or anything!!
What a wonderful side effect of the surgery!!!

I had ibs. One of the most common side effects I see people complain of
with rny is constipation. Somehow the two seem to have clashed and combined
in a really positive way where I'm concerned. I am more *normal* than I've
ever been. Occasionally if I eat certain things I will have an episode, but
I have to say the rny has almost ... I hate to use the word cured, but
really my ibs is practically non existent since surgery. I did have
horrible runs for about two weeks after surgery, the anesthesia set me off,
but since then it's been so much better!
Good luck

I have suffered with IBS for years. I am so much better since my RNY! Part
of the improvment stems from the fact that I learned quickly after surgery
what foods were causing me problems. After RNY your system is so much
faster, you know within minutes if a food is a problem. Milk is a problem
and I don't drink it at all anymore. But in general I much less likely to
have to run to the bathroom. I have far fewer painful cramps, and not an
accident in months now. Surgery Oct.17 2001 weighed 265, today 153.
