Question:
Am wondering if Lovenox shots should also be given as a back up to the IVC Filter?

Hello, I am 28 years old and had a bloodclot Dec 2000. It was from my pregnancy. My son was born Oct 29 2000. They believe it developed in my pelvis. My doctor (surgeon) said she wanted me to have the IVC filter in. I was wonderfing first what happens if the cot develops above the filter and when it gets caught it is still above the filter? How much does the filter actually work? Success rate? Does anyone know? Also would you suggest combinding this with Lovenox shots after surgery to have as a back up? I am having my surgery at St. Vincent in Indy with Dr. magaret Inman. Amy Rice    — Amy R. (posted on July 30, 2002)

Hi, I am a nurse and have worked lots with both the filter and the lovenox. Once they put in the filter, it is very likely that they will also give you lovenox for a few days after surgery. They may also have you on a "blood thinner" for a little longer to prevent clots. The filter is just to keep the blood clot from going into your heart and lungs, but it does not prevent them from forming in the first place. The lovenox will prevent them from forming. It is highly unlikely that you will develop a clot past the filter. Those vessels are so large, that it just does not happen. Hope this helps and answers your questions!!
