Question:
Has any had ins pay for upper arm surgery?

Help! I've just been diagnosed with Batwing Deformity....aka... flabby upper arms. After losing 130 pounds, that's my problem area. I admit to be a very vain person and I admit that I had this surgery so that I would look better. I look great. But I can't wear sleeveless clothes and that's a real bummer. Can anone think of any medical justifications for surgery? Has anyone had it? How much did it cost? This inquiring mind wants the whole story because if my insurer won't cover it, I'll have get a second job and save up.    — [Anonymous] (posted on September 27, 2001)

Yes, brachioplasty (batwing removal) is supposed to be covered by insurance, along with thighplasty, abdominoplasty, and lower body lift -- as mastoplexy (breast reduction) as well. Mine and many of my WLS friends have had success getting insurance coverage -- although some have had crappy insurance runarounds and had to appeal. It is all outlines in the Amer. Plastic Surgery Assoc. Position Paper as reduction of redundant skin after massive weight loss. Files and message board at OSSG-PlasticSurgery discuss these issues. One woman got approval for 7 separate surgeries at once last week!!!! Hopefully this indicates that approvals will be easier to get. I've had my arms, breasts, & stomach covered by insurance and have just had pics and consult for pre-approval of my lower body lift (butt & outer thighs). I've lost 181 lbs in the last 2 years and while everything looks great (thanks to reconstructive surgery), all that remains is a rear end that is reminiscent of a rhino.
