Question:
What types of expenses can I expect when having surgery out of state?
I am considering going to SF, CA to have my surgery. What type of expenses aside from the hotel can I expect. Do I need to budget for anything I may not be thinking of. Right now we are thinking hotel room, transportation, food for my helper. We are probably wanting to stay for about 1 week(will that be long enough?) there and will be flying there and back from Tulsa. Has anyone else done this and can you let me know about your costs so I know what to expect. Thanks, Char Gibson — Char G. (posted on October 8, 1999)

Did you know you have a bariatric board-certified surgeon right in Tulsa?
Dr. Luis Gorsope (sp?) I live in Kansas about 150 miles from Wichita, and
I was considering him. I have read several favorable comments from others
on this site regarding him and how handy would be for you. Or do you know
something negative about this surgeon that you would feel moved to share
with others? I only wish I had a board-certified surgeon in Kansas City!

Well, we sure have a lot in common. I live south of Tulsa, however,
traveling out of state to Nashville for my surgery. Out of state expenses
are a great consideration, but worth every penny if your with a competent
surgeon you trust and feel comfortable with. Let me caution you on
traveling by car or plane on such a long trip just before surgery. My
surgeon was concerned for the formation of blood clots on such a long
car trip, so he wants me there in Nashville two weeks prior for pre-op
testing and to do special tests to look for clots and insert IVC filter.
(which scares me also), Good luck and talk to your surgeon a head of
time.. I found some furnished apartment close to the hospital that rents
by the week for transplant patients and corporations I will make my
decision to do that or we will take our RV..

Hi Char, I recently traveled to NY from Illinois for my surgery (9/23). I
flew, however. I think a trip like that home by car would have been rather
rough. I had all my pre-op tests done in Ill. so I only had to be there 1
day before surgery to meet with my Dr. My Dr. wanted me to stay until the
staples were removed so I was there from 9/21 and left on 10/1. I had to
budget for cabs and also liquids for myself for the week after surgery. (I
took most things with me).If you are flying, try to stay someplace near
restaurants and groceries that your companion can walk to. That could save
you on cabs or renting a car. Good Luck!! Karla
