Question:
How much weight can you lose with proximal bypass?
I understand that weight loss is greater with a distal bypass. However, the weight loss center where I would have to go does only proximal RNY. I'd hate to have the procedure only to lose a little weight...I want to lose 165-180 pounds!! Has anyone had a proximal RNY and lost a great deal of weight and what is your present weight? — Dorothy N. (posted on May 24, 2002)

I had a proximal bypass 14.5 months ago and have lost (so far) 180.5 lbs.
I have 36.5 lbs. to goal. You can do it! It may take a little more work,
but it IS possible. And look at the bright side ... you won't ever suffer
the kind of malnutrition problems that distals routinely experience.

I am 11 months out and have lost 162 pounds. My starting wt. was 321 and I
am teetering at 158-159. I'm 5-6" and don't care if I lose another
pound! But, I am still losing a pound here and there....I'm a loser! Yay!
Proximal was the way to go for me. My lab work is good, too. Good luck.

I had a proximal RNY on 1/8/01. My starting weight was 264. I reached my
goal weight (139) in about 9 months. I now weigh 120, so I've lost 144 lbs.
I am actually trying to gain a little weight back. I suppose I'm evidence
that you can lose a significant amount of weight (although I've seen much
more weight loss than I've had). I am also reassured that I don't have the
serious malabsorption complications. Good luck! Shelley
