Question:
I did a bad thing and am VERY afraid I won't be approved!
I've had my current insurance since September 1st, 2001. When I was filling out the application, my boss was standing behind me (making me very nervous, by the way), waiting for me to hand it in. I wrote my weight down as much lower than it is, I was afraid he would see. Am I doomed to denial? Or will my pre-authorization paperwork from the surgeon's office be more important. In my defense, I really had no idea how much I weighed, although I knew it was more than I wrote down. Help!! I'm scared to death! — [Anonymous] (posted on January 16, 2002)

The authorization unit (usually rn's) don't see your insurance
application. They'll make their decision based on the clinical
documentation that the surgeon provides. Have to fear...they'll
never know what you put on the application.

How very inconsiderate of your boss to stand over you while filling out
such personal information. I really doubt highly this will affect anything.
I'm sure your doctor's reports/recommendations will have more strength in
the insurance companies determination to approve surgery. Good luck!

I don't want to freak you out, but I was originally denied for that reason,
although it was over 10 years ago and WLS was not so common then. I
grossly underestimated my weight and not only did they deny the VBG (my
choice of surgery at that time), but they also cancelled my policy. I
really hope that does not happen to you.
