Question:
Why do I just dry heave and only mucous content comes back up
never the food that made me sick in the first place. Im wondering if my anastomosis of my Open RNY is bigger than it should be and things are going straight into my small intestine without being digested properly. I also tend to get sick in the evenings more than any other time. I can eat the same thing i eat in the evening and the same amount but will get sick and dry heave and have to lay down. Never get diarrhea though. Just wondering if this is normal sometimes i wish i could throw up the food I think it would help me feel better faster but it never comes back up. What do ya think has anyone else experienced such. Thanks — kcraig (posted on November 26, 2000)

I used to do the same thing , It's pretty common in the first few months
after surgery. Just watch EVERYTHING you put into that pouch , I never knew
what would cause it. I reciently had a couple of episodes after eating
sugarless candy!! I don't know what was in it to make me sick but it did.
You will get better and by the way I read your profile, you are doing
GREAT!!

My doctor told me that the upper part of the stomach is a mucous
producer. Mine also foams! In talking to another lady in our support
group she had the same problem but it does subside with time.

Actually, it sounds like your stoma has narrowed. I had the same problem
with mucous and I was dilated 2mm. Solved the problem.
Good luck.

I had this problem at first too. I would feel so ill that I really wished
I could throw up, but only mucous and saliva would come up. I never really
figured out what was causing it, but I was guessing that my pouch didn't
have the muscle power to force the food back up, so only the stuff in my
lower throat was coming up. Luckily, things improved over time, and I
rarely get sick like that anymore. However, I still can't vomit like I
used to be able to pre-op (if I have the stomach flu or something), and
probably never will. Good luck!
