Question:
Does insurance cover lap RNY as easily as open?
Has anyone had a problem with their insurance covering a lap as easily as an open? I've read that a lap costs more so I wondered if insurance companies wouldn't approve a lap due to the additional expense? I'm curious why a lap cost more since you're in the hospital less time. I'd rather have a lap but I would possibly use another surgeon if I thought my insurance would only cover an open. I realize I can ask this, I just wondered what everyones experience with this was. — Ronda B. (posted on July 26, 2000)

I've researched both and I've come to the conclusion that yes, lap is
better if you find a qualified surgeon. I wanted someone who was
experienced in lap for awhile and I found him. He's been doing it for
about 10 years, here in the valley. The reason it does usually cost more is
because it takes alot more expensive equipment than open. Also, a good lap
surgeon has valuable experience. I know of a few drs. lately who
"experiemented" because lap is in such demand, but no thanks, I
think I'll wait for the experience. Insurance hasn't been a problem with
most of us for lap, at least any more than with an open. Mine went right
through. Hope this helps.

I am insured by United Healthcare of Illinois. I was denied only because
the surgeon does the procedure LAP! He won't do it any other way, and the
company won't budge... at this point. I'm in the process of writing to the
insurance commissioner for his help. They feel it is
"experimental"... not the surgery, just doing it lap.
