Question:
My mother got an intestinal bypass surgery done in the 70's is she going to die?
Since my mother's surgery in the 70's, she has had dumping syndrome and two years ago she had internal bleeding. She still has not had the surgery reversed. I must get information on studies, etc. done on the effects of intestinal bypass surgery - can anyone help me find info on this - I am afraid she'll die if we dont get it reversed. — tammy S. My aunt also had an intestinal bypass in the late seventies. she had the
reversal because of liver failure. I highly recommend she see about it.

essentially 100% of patients who have had a jejunoileal bypass will have
diarrhea, it's the malabsobtion or lack of absorbtion that results in the
weight loss. The primary reason this type of surgery has been abandoned
was the development of liver failure and severe protien deficiencies that
typically developed after surgery. A number of patients also develop
recurrent kidney stones and severe arthritis. Most bariatric surgeons
would recommend converting patients with this type of surgery to a gastric
bypass or VBG depending on their overall health. If surgery is not
considered certainly she should be followed very closely even at this late
date for protein, electrolyte, and liver problems.

I had the surgery done in 1974. I was 21 at the time. I am now 52. I have
not had any major problems at all. My mother and aunt also had this
procedure done. My mother is doing fine to. She is now 80 years old. My
aunt died many years ago. Unrelated to this surgery. If you would like
more detailed info. email me at [email protected]
