Question:
Does the Greenfield filter cause you any discomfort?
Because of my history of blood clots, a Greenfield filter was placed in my groin. it is now 7 weeks since it was placed there and it still bothers me. Those people who had one inserted, does it bother you too? It's not a lot of pain, but it is definately uncomfortable! Unless it's my new hernia that is causing the trouble!!!! — Judy S. I had a "Birdsnest" vena cava filter inserted in my groin after I
developed blood clots post op. The filter didn't cause me any pain then or
since. Not sure if it's exactly the same as the one you have but they must
be similar. Hope this helps. I'm guessing you shouldn't still have pain
with it - you probably should check with the doctor about it. Good Luck!

The filters are very tiny and made of extremely fine wire mesh, (not much
thicker than coarse human hair.) It would be unusual for anyone to
"feel" the filter. When the filters are placed via the femoral
vein several things can happen. 1-you get a small track of scar tissue that
takes a while to work out or become softer. 2-there can be a hemmorage at
the puncture site of the skin and the vessel, resulting in a leak either
under the skin or into the vessel wall. The first is usually nothing more
than a really nasty bruise, it will go away. The latter is called a
pseudo-aneurysm, sort of like a bulge in a garden hose becasue the water
pressure forces some H2O between the layers of vinyl. This can require a
surgical repair and needs to be evaluated by a ultrasound scan. 3-Your
hernia can definately mimick the sensations of the above conditions, BUT,
the above conditions can also mimick a hernia. THE BOTTOM LINE IS GET IT
CHECKED OUT BY YOUR PHYSICIAN! Cheers! Iris Thiessen RN
