Question:
Last time I saw surgeon in March 04 he said still eat 4 oz???
Howwever, I know I am eating about 8 oz of food total-about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup of chili or sometimes I just stop when I am full. Sometimes I can eat a 2-3 oz turkey burger w/sauteed mushrooms onions, and cheese and some veggies maybe like 1/2 cup cooked or less.Sometimes I can barely finish that meal and I just stop when I'm full-My surgeon never knew that much about the nutritional aspect of the surgery-the first couple months he said no more than 2 oz and now at 13 mos 4 oz-I'm confused does this sound right-I try and eat at least 3 meals a day and sometimes 1 or 2 snacks- I average about 900-1200 cals a day-On my bad adays I don;t even count- :)I am now doing South Beach to help me get to goal-146lbs down and hopefully forever-Thanks for your help — TotallyTori (posted on April 14, 2004)

When I saw my surgeon at 3 months she told me I should be able to eat about
4 oz of food at that point. I am now 4 months out. (I can if it's kinda
soft, denser stuff maybe 2.5 to 3 oz) they told us at a year or so out we
should be able to eat about 8 oz. (some people more, some people less) so
It sounds like you can eat what you should be able to.

But just because you can eat that much doesn't mean you have to, I can eat
close to 4 oz now and be full, but more often than not, I eat 2 to 2.5 oz
since that is all that it takes to satisfy me.

It must be tough to not feel that you are getting great guidance from your
surgeon. You should consider seeing a nutritionist to help you better
plans your meals-- the direction a nutritionist could provide you might
just help you through this period. As for capacity, you are eating more
than I can (and I'm 18 months out)-- however, much of that may be due to
your food choices, which is (once again) a subject that a nutritionist
could guide you on. Good luck.

I don't think I eat more than most post-ops on this board and a 2 oz burger
is not much that is about 4 tablespoons of ground meat made into a patty
and then cooked-I am not concerned that I am eating too much at all. I'm
just curious as to what others have been told-Original Poster here

At your stage my surgeon said to eat between 3/4 of a cup and a cup. I
couldn't do it yet though. Now I think thats where I am though I don't
measure. My surgeon says to eat a cup to a cup and a half. I'm 20 months
out today and down 190 pounds. The nutrionist thinks based on my
description that I'm at 3/4 of a cup or less. I don't know but I am still
loosing and I pretty much eat what i want to and just watch fat content and
sugar because I do still dump. Carrie

I was told I should not eat more than 1/2 food (solid) at a sitting. I
really don't eat a lot of solid foods. I love soup and add chopped shrimp,
veges, and a slice of FF cheese. With soup I have about 6 ozs. I'm 1 year
post op and have gone from 324lbs to 149lbs. Feel great!

I'm 14.5 months PO and depending on what I am eating it is in the same
ballpark to higher than what you describe. For lunch I am having about 3-4
ounces of left over steak with a few mushrooms and onions, some baked
potato with cheese and bacon, maybe 2+ ounces (but haven't dug into that
yet and feeling pretty full) and I had a small dinner roll with butter. My
meals can be quite a bit less to sometimes more. I find if I go out to eat
and am gabbing while I eat, I do eat less. The other night I tried to have
2 pieces of toast for supper and could not finish them. They are 8 grams
of protein each and only 3 grams of carbs each so I did not feel guilty
eating only bread. It just sounded good that night but was quite filling
with all the grains etc. in it.
<p>You are eating quite a few softer things that would go down easy,
so that' also why you can probably eat more. The quantity I eat some days
so of freaks me out but yet I am maintaining or slowly losing. I was down
247 lbs last week and 5 lbs past goal, so I really am not interested in
losing any more than what PS will remove yet. Have about 10-12 lbs to come
off with the remaining PS's, assuming I can afford to get them done. Most
days I'm eating 1200-1500 calories but the surgeon says it's working for my
body so don't mess with it. I have a pretty good muscle mass so I'm sure
that helps keep the metabolism up and burn things. If you are not at goal
and find that you need to do a diet then personally I would go back to very
strict protein and get the weight off now. I know for me if I want the
scale to move it's more protein and push the water. Has worked every time
including getting that last 9 lbs off before PS. You've done wonderfully.
Just focus on those dense proteins and it will go a long way.
