Question:
I am 3 days post op, came home today have no weight loss possibly a gain.,
I have no pain or pain pills that I take, they took away my blood pressure because it was so low before and after surgery. I thought I would have some weight loss when I came home. I drink 8 glasses of water and no more than 3/4 cup of full liquids. Is this normal? — Barbara J. (posted on February 21, 2004)

Congrats on feeling so good! I gained 8# in the hospital and have friends
who gained as much as 15! It's all fluid and it goes away by the time
you're a week or 10 days out. Back away from the scale for awhile! Like 2
years. Save your sanity! You WILL lose, but it just doesn't ever happen
fast enough for us!

Yep....I left the hospital 15 pounds heavier than when I went in. I was
thinking "What the heck?" but it was all fluids and I was very
bloated.I lost it very quickly though.

Throw the scale away and only weigh once a month! That is what I do and
then I do not get wrapped around loosing weight but focusing on doing the
right things. Many people gain weight after surgery because of all the
junk that was pumped into you during the op.

Please don't set yourself up for disappointment so soon. It's only been 3
days. You get pumped with IV fluids while you are in the hospital. I came
home with 4 lbs more than I went in with. It took about 5-7 days for me to
start losing. I'm not going to tell you to throw away the scale, because I
know I couldn't. I'm 9 months out and I still weigh every day.
(DON"T YELL AT ME FOR THAT) But that works for me, it doesn't for
everyone. I am finally down to only weighing in once a day though, lol.
Just keep doing things the way your Doctor and Nutritionist told you to do
and the weight will start melting off. Good Luck to you :-) LAPRNY

Don't even worry about it. I gained 12 pounds from the fluids they give me
at the hospital. Three weeks after the surgery I was down 40 pounds. Good
luck on your journey!

off in about 2 weeks.

It is very normal to gain weight after surgery. They pump almost 10 quarts
of iv fluid into you during surgery and your body's response to the stress
of the surgery is to hang onto the fluid. You will eventually loose the
excess fluid. I gained 30# after my open RNY last May. My legs looked like
sausages. I could only wear slip-on slippers for about 1 1/2 weeks. Good
luck welcome to the other side.

3 days post-op is too early to expect a weight-loss. Even during my tummy
tuck they were filling me full of liquids! Stay away from the scale, and
give it some time... I know you're excited for things to start happening,
but you should concentrate on healing, not instant gratification. This will
take work, not "just add water" type results". Be thrilled
that you feel good upon coming home, and plan for the healthy future that
you are going to have. Best wishes to you!
