Question:
WHICH PROTEIN SHAKES TO STAY AWAY FROM?

Whey, Soy, isolates, concentrates, there are so many different ones out there. From what I understand you should stick with the Whey Isolates. What should I look for when choosing one and what should I stay away from? Can you suggest some NAME BRANDS that I should steer clear of and some that are good choices? How about this Unjury that i've been hearing about? I just want to be sure that what I am consuming is the right choice. Thank you!!!!    — Kelly* P. (posted on November 5, 2003)

I love unjury. It is made from Whey Isolate. It comes in 3 flavors, chocolate, vanilla and unflavored. I love the chocolate, it tastes just like chocolate milk and mixes really good. You can get samples sent to you. Find Jeromes email address on the unjury site, www.unjury.com and he will send them to you. It is worth a shot. I tried so many protein powders/drinks and did not like any of them till I tried Unjury. Good luck!

I'd stay away from soy. Stick with Whey. Personally I like Isopure Zerocarb or low carb (3 g. carbs). I wouldn't say it's "great," but it is good.

Personally, I did not like the Unjury and prefer the Isopure Zero Carb for vanilla and the Proscore 100 for chocolate. What you want to look for is at least 20-25 grams of protein per scoop, lo or no sugar, and lo or no carbs, and reasonable calories. Also, whey protein isolate is the best absorbed. Each person has their own tastes though and new pre-ops usually hate them all, the further out you get, the more you like them and will find what works best for you. www.vitalady.com, you can buy samples to try....

Whey is the highest availability. Isolate is not necessarily better for "us". Blends are better, and include isolate. But the better here is not substantial. The blends offer more "sustained satisfaction" and maybe a smidge better absorption. This would not be huge. If the one you love is an isolate (such as the Nectar family), that doesn't mean you HAVE to change. You want to avoid MRP's. That's Meal Replacements. They often come in packets vs a cannister, and would be over 200 cal to deliver 30g protein. And of course, you want something that will mix easily in water.

AND if you want it to taste good, try ProPlete Gold. The chocolate tastes just like melted ice cream. You can get it for $19.99 at vigorousliving.com. I have stocked up on this and the nectar for my post-op life. I have also been drinking them this week as my surgery is on Monday.

I personally could LIVE on EAS Advant-Edge Carb Control shakes (esp the french vanilla!). Available at Wal-Mart, $5.86 for 4 pre-mixed 330ml tetrapacks. I really think they've helped me get to goal in just 10.5 mos (285/157, 5'7"). Cheers.

It all depends on what you are looking for. Low carb, no carb, medium protein or high protein. My personal preference is the (dont't laugh) Dr Phil "Shape Up" shakes. They have slightly more carbs than the Atkins shakes but have more protein. And the chocolate ones taste great. I found them at Wal-Mart and if memory serves they were $5.83 for 4 16 oz. cans. Good luck.
