Question:
Stopped vitamins for 2 years now....wondering.........

I know I'm gonna get slack for this, but i stopped my vitamins 2 years ago.I want to restart but i think i'be been hearing changes in what we are to take now...can somebody tell me what we sould be on, or a web site to find out? I used to take 2 flintstones, 4 chewable calcium, 1 sub b-12 and an iron pill. Is there more now? Thanks    — VIXYVIX (posted on August 25, 2003)

at least you are looking to get back on track now. you might want to check with our doc and see what they feel you will need, they may want to check labs.

Vicki, may I suggest that you have labs taken first to see where you are? I've had labs taken every 3-6 months and they are just fine each time, yet I do not take B-12 or iron and my levels are good. My surgeon says some people need these supplemented and others get enough thru their multivitamins and food. But your quoting the right vitamins- some have moved past Flintstones to other types of multivitamins, and calcium comes many ways-just make sure it is citrate. That might be the biggest change in the past two years is that the community is pretty unanimous in taking calcium citrate and not calcium carbonate.

Call your surgeon - or your PCP and get checked out. I take a prenatal vitamin twice a day and Cirtacal three times a day and have a B12 shot once a month. My surgeon stressed to me that I would have to take the vitamins (prenatal because they have extra iron) and calcium for life and that was understood before having surgery. I have the B12 for insurance - my levels have never been low. I have my blood levels checked once a year now. My doctor checks for iron, binding iron, B12, and folate.

I can't add to the great advice you've already been given. But, congratulations on getting back on track, and looking out for your own future health.

I'm glad that you are trying to take better care of your health and get back on track. Congrats...I just wanted to add one that nobody mentioned and that is the "fish oil" vitamins which are E and D, I believe. I get mine from my local GNC, but I'm sure you can get them from anywhere. I had read that everyone(not just GB patients)needs vitamin D to help absorb calcium and that if you are deficient in that then you won't absorb your calcium as well. I don't know if this is true, but my doc wants me to take it and I don't see how it could hurt me. Good luck! Denise/RNY 3/20/03 -98lbs

I am 2 1/2 yrs post op and have not taken my vitamins. Whenever I had my lab work done my iron levels were fine. What I did not realize was that my body was using my stored iron and guess what,I am now anemic. I am now taking my iron and will continue to do so for life. Dont make the same mistake I did. Debbie
