Question:
Any one with other non MO health issues? I had thyroid cancer (3 years post-op).

I have thyroid cancer, i guess they say 'cancer' never goes away, but i have been 'cancer free' (due to surgery) for over 3 years. It is a VERY easy cancer to treat and cure, but will this in any way hinder my hopefully future WLS? I have a very supportive endocrineologist, who also treats my diabetes. I take thyroid hormones and will have to for the rest of my life (NO THYROID GLAND HERE!). Anyone with a similar experience????? Please let me know.    — Keri P. (posted on July 7, 2003)

Hi Keri, I had my right thyroid removed last year and 3 months ago I had WLS. 3 weeks ago they found new tumors on my left left thyroid lobe. There are many of us on this website with similar situations, all of the thyroid gone, part of the thyroid gone or with other thyroid issues. The Thyroid surgery will not affect your weight loss. Post surgery, you would need to remember not to take it too close to your calcium, iron and vitamins because it will inhibit the absorbtion (it does this with or without WLS). In many cases, RNY also helps diabetics by either reducing their insulin needs or by causing the need for insulin to go away completely (everyone is different). Best regards -

Hi Kerri! Not to worry, you will have no problem getting WLS. I too had thyroid cancer 13 years ago and they removed my entire thyroid. I am 6 weeks post-op BPD/DS and minus 40 lbs and take my synthroid every day! Good luck :)
