Question:
I've been eating granola in SF/NF Dannon yogurt? Bad or Good
The granola is made by Zoe Foods it is a flax and soy granola it has 180 cals, 7grams of fat,10 grams of protein(5 from soy) and 28 carbs-I try not to worry about carbs too much but this is freaking me out and today I had two cartons of yogurt 60 cals with about 1tsp of slivered almonds and 2 TBSP of the granola ( this was sprinkled on each serving) The last serving of yogurt I added one sliced strawberry-is this bad for me the serving size for the granola is 2/3=.66 and I only eat total 1/2 cup=.50-Should I cut the granola down to once a day just a 1/4 cup serving or do you guys think I'm ok-I used fitday and it seems I get most of my cals from fat, carbs, and protein-but for some reason I can never cusomize fitday to what I actually eat. For example if I only use turkey breast meat in my chilli (alot less fat and cals) thamn regular ground turkey I have to select the regular turkey chili from the fitday selection and then it ups the cals and fat more so than I had, but anyways my total cals for the day was 808-Should I just not worry about the carbs- All I had today was 1 1/2 slices of turkey bacon for breakfast w/one strwbry, for lunch I had one Boca burger with 1 slice of cheese and 1tsp of ketchup, dinner was 1/2 cup of turkey breast chili, and snacks today include the two cartons of SF/NF yogurt with the toppings- I don't get it, Am I doing this right I'm 3 1/2 mos post op...Tori By the way I think fitday has my fat grams up way to high as well, I am cautious about fat intake, anybody else???? I'm flustered sorry this is so long-Another reason why I stopped counting cals and just eat — TotallyTori (posted on July 4, 2003)

Your diet doesn't sound bad to me. It sounds like you get protein at every
sitting and are eating everything in reasonable amounts. Personally, I only
keep track of three things: Protein (100 grams or so), fiber (35 grams or
so), and total calories. I am on maintenance, so I try to keep my total
calories below 2000. At your stage of the game, 800 calories sounds
reasonable. It is enough to keep your energy and metabolism up but low
enough to lose weight at a good clip. All carbs are not created equal.
Whole grain carbs are good for you in moderation. It sounds like your
granola is pretty good for you and has some whole grains (oatmeal, flax)
and protein in it. It sounds like you are doing a good job of avoiding
"white" carbs (white bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, etc.) and
eating things that will do your body good. The bottom line is that as long
as you are losing, don't worry about it. If you stop losing, you may want
to cut your carbs further. But remember the fiber (which, BTW, you can
subract from your carb count) . . . Life on a high-protein diet without
fiber can be pretty unpleasant! :)

I would agree with Cheri. If you stop losing you might want to cut the
carbs a bit. I would also keep the granola down to 1x a day if you can
since it's high in fat but no biggie if you can't. The white carbs are the
worst for you and it doesn't sound like you are doing that. I am not a big
believer in cutting carbs to the point where they are nonexistent but if I
need a jump in my weight loss I do it. I have been on a plateau for almost
4 weeks and just cut my carbs down to less than 20 a day for this past week
and the scale dropped immediately. I'll only keep this up for a week or
two and then slowly add good carbs back (not white bread, pasta or rice).

I put GrapeNuts in my yogurt. I still get the crunch like granola but it's
higher in fiber and doesn't have any added sugar. My surgeon told me to
eat GrapeNuts every day for fiber.

I am just a couple of weeks behind you, and the menu you described sounds
very much like what I eat, and my dietitian says I am doing as well as
anyone she's seen. I often put 1 tablespoon of either granola or
Grape-Nuts into half a cup of yogurt (as either my breakfast or a snack).
The crunch makes the yogurt more interesting. I also wouldn't worry too
much about counting fat or calories at this point. Concentrate on getting
in your protein and eating often enough. I'd say you're doing very well.
