Question:
Anybody scared to go to cooking school since having WLS???

After I graduate I dream of becoming a professional chef and owning my own bed and breakfast, and focus on health gourmet and comfort foods, Anyone else out there that love to cook, and I don't necessarily mean all my foods will be sugar free, but have those options for customers-Any chefs out there that had WLS and did being around all that food bother you-I want to apply to culinary school after next summer...Tori    — TotallyTori (posted on April 30, 2003)

i was talking to someone about this same subject today. i'm still preop and i hate to cook. because i KNOW if i make something good i will eat all of it. i was sitting alone at home one night thinking about this. I AM SCARED OF FOOD. it was like a light went off in my head. and then i thought that after i have wls i will feel somewhat free. i won't be so afraid of food and i will even look forward to cooking. i know this sounds strange, but i hope this helps.

Tori, great question. I have been thinking very hard of chaning careers and going to culinary school as well. At 2 wks post it scares me that I could be even considering such a thought. I've always enjoyed cooking but thought it was more because of the satisfaction in the end result (food). Now, I'm thinking about the actual cooking and not the eating part of it except for others. Right now I have no appetite but everyone tells me that will change in a few months. I guess I'll be able to make a better decision then. Good luck.

Ooooohhh... that sounds great! :) I'm not a chef, but just wanted to share w/ you that I love cooking much more now than pre-op. I use to be scared of food because I couldn't control my eating. Now that I'm much more in control, I enjoy taking the extra time to make something delicious (and healthy). Where I use to be more interested in volume, I now want whatever I put in my mouth to be WORTH eating, even if it's just a bite.

I'm a nurse and would love to go to culinary school! It's something I'd do in a minute if I didn't have to work for a living! LOL But I would like to check in to it to see how much class time there is. I've done a TON of experimental baking/cooking since WLS, trying to come up with yummy low sugar recipes and have come up with some really great ones. I say follow your dream! BTW, if interested, check out my profile page or www.freewebs.com/recipes-after-rny for sample recipes, photos and ordering information for the book.

I did study in College to be a chef, and we opened a little restaurant in Campus, It was a lot of fun, but when I went to my psychological examination, he told me that I had chosen the wrong carrer, is like if an alcoholic works in a bar. But I still think that to be a chef is not bad as long as you are faithful with the right diet for a wls patient even that you still have to taste everything you cook to see if it needs something, but I think you can still be what you want. Good Luck, and if you feel like talking email me....
