Question:
How much should I be exercising at 5wks post RNY...
I just had my g-tube taken out and it was really painful while in, but now that it is out I wanna start exercising-I have a new membership at Bally's and am curious will the exercise cause a plateau or spped up the weight loss, how much do I need to do to speed up the loss and do you supplement calories burned I am trying to get in 600 cals a day, I emailed my doc today to see if I should be getting more as I have had varied answers to total calorie consumption at 5 weeks... Any help will be appreciated.. Thanks Tori — TotallyTori (posted on April 14, 2003)

Hi Tori, this answer will be varied as well! lol There is no one right way
to do many things post-op. And as you are still early out- you don't have
to strain yourself. Even doing 20 minutes 3 times a week is sufficient. At
the gym, you could do 20 minutes of lifting (try to break up upper and
lower body into different days, otherwise you will be there all day) And
then do 20 minutes cardio. See how this works for you, then you can
increase the times. Start doing 3 times a week, then 4, then even 5 if you
want, but don't do too much all at once or you will burn out quickly! You
may hit a small plateau at the start of exercise, but nothing to be worried
about. Otherwise it will realyl speed your weight loss alot! And I didn't
concern myself with calories or counting anything until after being 6
months post-op. I figured I couldn't get that much in anyway, it didn't
matter. This was suggested to me by my nutritionist and surgeon and RN. So
whatever works for you. Goodluck to you!

Hi...I wasn't cleared until after 6 weeks to do any exercising other than
walking so that I gave myself enough time to completely heal, and to make
sure I didn't give myself any hernias along my incisions. I don't know
what your doctor will say, but I'd say give it another week or so then
start slowly. Good luck!
