Question:
Does anyone have a registry list or state by state list of surgeons..
My private care physician has recomended me for WLS, I have researched the procedure and completely undstand the risks, I have already been approved for the surgery through my better health care provider under the medicaid co-pay... The wall that has cropped up to block further travel down this road to being healthy is I can find no surgeon within a 100 mile radius that accepts medicaid as a form of insurance. Any information anyone could give would be most appreciated! — H. S. E. (posted on January 31, 2003)

This site has a surgeon database. Go to the top of any page and click on
"find a doc" (on some pages it's called "surgeons")
Then click on #2 "browse the list", next click on your state
(GA). You will then get a list of surgeons and their locations. Next to the
surgeon click on "view" and you will go to that surgeon's
specific page. Scroll down on each page and you will find a listing of
insurance companies that have paid for their services. I scrolled down just
a few and found Dr. Duncan (?) in Atlanta that did a procedure that was
paid for by medicaid. I stopped scrolling there, but I'm sure if you
continue to scroll down and do it for each surgeon, that you will find
more. I don't know the geography of your state to know if Atlanta is very
far for you. However, there are numerous people that travel 3 or 4 hours to
a particular surgeon or to somewhere their insurance will cover. So, you
may have to travel to find medicaid coverage. I hope this page helps you.

Shelly: I have used this tool already, but thank you for the advice! It's
great to see so much activity here. I can barely keep up ;) I have spoken
with several physicians, including one listed here as 'accepting medicaid'
and he no longer participates in the program. One office in particular,
was rude beyond belief and went so far as to hang up on me after finding my
insurance 'coverage' was medicaid. I'm so frustrated =(

Have you checked with Medicaid to see if they can provide you with the
names of any surgeons that accept Medicaid? I think that the surgeons who
accept Medicaid can only do a limited amount of Medicaid surgeries each
year (it's usually a certain percentage of their total surgeries) so you
may have to wait awhile, even if you do find a surgeon who accepts
Medicaid.
