Question:
I am 6 weeks post-op lap Ryn and am concerned about how much I can eat
I don't go back to the doctor till March so I need some help example of what I ate that freaked me out half of a 6inch turkey sub with the works from subway, 1 chicken plank from KFC and half of the individual mash potatoes and gravy, about half of the santa fe chicken salad from applebees. I don't also eat out I used these examples because I though a lot of people would know the sizes of these examples. I have only one time at pain like I ate to much (not really pain but more of pressure)Help I have lost over 30 pounds already down to 234 from 268 — kathy B. (posted on January 28, 2003)

Kathy, I am 7 weeks out. My Dr just started letting me eat deli meats, tuna,
canned chicken. She told me not to try bread for at least 6 months.I can
have 3 oz of food 3 times per day.She also advised me to stay away from
fried foods. One other really important thing is not to drink and eat at a
meal..Wait at least 20 to 30 minutes in between. You are doing good!!!

Everyone can eat different amounts at different times, that said... I'm 6.5
weeks post, and there's no WAY I can eat that much. I'd be in serious pain.
I haven't even attempted raw vegetables yet, not even on a sandwich, not to
mention the bread portion. But, that's just me. That amount might be a
normal amount for your size pouch and stoma. I'm anxious to see what
everyone else says. Maybe I eat too little, and you are eating an average
amount!

Everyone is different, just like the previous poster said. ANd I was still
on soft foods at 6 weeks out, but every doc is different as well. I also
agree that I think you're eating a bit too much, not to scare you. I would
call your surgeon before March and talk to him about it. Were you
transected? I know that I am 8 months out and still cannot eat 6inch sub w/
everything, and wouldn't b.c of all the bread, and I still cannot eat 1/2
of the smaller serving of a salad from Applebee's. I eat about 2-3 ounces
per meal now and get full. I would just give your surgeon a call, and
discuss it with him, b/c no one knows better than those in charge of your
surgery. Goodluck to you, and congrats on a great weight loss so far!

There is NO WAY I can eat that much! I'm 6 weeks post-op and my weight
loss is almost identical to yours. I guess everyone is different. I
wouldn't dare try bread again (I was beyond sick the last time) so the
sandwich is out. I might be able to do the 1/2 mashed potatoes, but if I
did that I could only eat like one bite of the chicken - not a whole piece.
And the salad... I could maybe eat a couple pieces of the chicken and a
bite of the lettuce, but definately not half. Don't mean to scare you, but
that seems like a lot to me.

I was triing to 'think' when I ate my first 6" sub.... I think I was
about 3 or 4 months out... Had NO problem... eating it.. I had the RNY.
Turns out I have a 'large stoma' the doctor finally did an upper GI since I
was concerned with the volume... Turns out THIS is a post complication of
the RNY. It happens to about 1% of the people.. If you have
"it" your pouch is not being used AT ALL, food is falling
directly from your espogus to your intestines. THIS allows for MORE food
than a "NORMAL" RNY> The rest of your RNY will still be
working (so you will loose weight) BUT you will have to "learn"
to limit yourself... since your RNY will NOT be doing it for you. This
complication has been arround for YEARS , and according to the person I
talk to at the Bariatric Association, few surgeons have had 'luck' fixing
it - so they revert back to telling their patients to "diet and
excercise". I would not wait, I would call your surgeon to have an
upper GI test done to see if this is indead your problem. Then again (if
you DID NOT have your stomach transected) could be you have staple line
distruption. Please let him check for sure.
