Question:
I need advice on choosing and purchasing a wig.
I had my surgery on 12-18-02 and want to be prepared in the event that I start to lose my hair. I am considering getting a wig to have on hand just in case. Those of you who have bought wigs---what advice do you have? Did you order from a catalog/on-line or did you go to a store to try some on first? I want to get something that looks like myself---any advice will be appreciated, including good websites. Thanks guys! — asumamma1 (posted on January 17, 2003)

I would not go ahead a purchase a wig ahead of time!!! Please wait and see
if you truly need it, then if so I would go to a store and be fitted for
one.

Nobody I know has ever lost so much hair that they needed a wig, but, hey,
if it makes you happy, I would go to a good salon or wig store and try a
few on...who knows maybe something with long red hair might just be
perfect!

While this won't be a very popular response, I would suggest contacting a
cancer treatment facility in your area. They often have very beautiful
wigs or know of where you can get one. A friend of mine who DID NOT have
cancer, but had another health issue that caused her to lose her hair
contacted them, and they were most helpful, kind and treated her with
dignity and respect.
Good Luck!! Have a Sparkling Day!! ~CAE~

I have very fine hair and was sure I was going to go completely bald. I
did thin somewhat, but I was the only one who noticed. I lost hair between
months 6 and 8 post-op. Nowadays (I am two years post-op), my hair is
thicker and shinier than it has EVER been! Personally, I wouldn't buy a
wig before you need one, because there's a good chance you won't need one.

Thanks for all of your responses! I will hold out as long as possible, but
will use your advice if I need to go and buy one. The suggestion about
cancer clinics is actually a very good one! Several of the wig stores in
my area are listed as being located in treatment centers! Thanks again!

There are gorgeous human hair and other wigs, hairpieces at
http://www.fekewigs.com Also a member of this site, Rhia Drouilard
purchased one there (and freely wrote about it on this site, so I'm not
telling tales out of school), and she looks great in it. I'm contemplating
a longish hair piece from Feke...just gotta save up the $$$...they are a
bit expensive, but they are really good quality. Hugs, Joy

I personaly would not buy a wig. The friction of wearing one can cause a
lot of hair loss and if you resort to wearing your own hair then you have
lost more the you should. There are small hairpieces that work into your
own hair that look super and do not feel awkward and give the illusion of
having more on top. A good hairdresser will style it to fit in with what
you have.

I am were you are, I found some real nice wigs at PaulaYoung.com, the
prices are not bad, if you buy it and can wear it great, if you do not
donate it to a cancer facility. That is what I will be doing, I have not
had the surgery yet, I do not even have a date yet, but I have very thin
hair because of my diabetes and I am on blood thinners, so any little loss
would be bad. you can see my scalp now, so I am buying a wig and I might
even wear it before surgery. Hope this helps

one of the other posters mentioned that wearing a wig could cause
hair-loss, in and of itself. i wore a wig, daily, for over 15 years (it
was a religious requirement) and, i never had any problems with hair loss.
there is a wide spectrum of wigs -- various qualities and price ranges.
now, IF you were to wear a wig, would you want it to be 'natural' and
unnoticeable?? or would you prefer to boldly change styles.... lengths,
and/or colors?? as i said, having worn the things for years, i'd humbly
suggest that you initially TRY ON a wig. if you are near an area with an
orthodox jewish community, call the synagogue, and ask if anyone there
(like the rabbi's wife) could give you some information as to where they
buy THEIR wigs. i know that i bought mine (and over 16 years, one can own
MANY wigs...<sigh>) from an assortment of women who sold and styled
them in their homes. there are sites on the internet which sell wigs, BUT,
i've never seen any wig which looked good without styling, which you can't
get on the internet. a search of 'north carolina wig stores' brought up
several possibilities for you, i don't know how convenient any of them
might be for you. i only mention the religious aspect because, having
followed that tradition for many years, and having lived among other women
who do, as well, i've seen the variety of products available. if you have
questions, please, e-mail me, and i'll try to get more information to you.
best of luck.
