Question:
IF ATKINS DIDN
Hi, I've done Atkins 2-3 times before and I never lost any weight, maybe 1-2 pounds in the first 2 weeks. I've been doing Atkins for the last one and a half weeks to get ready for surgery and again I haven't lost any weight, maybe 1 pound tops. But I can do Weight Watchers and lose every week. I know after surgery I must do high protien. Has anyone failed at Atkins but had great sucess with the surgery? — Kelly* P. (posted on January 14, 2003)

I tried the Atkin's Diet three times before I had weightloss surgery. I
failed miserably all three times. I stuck to the plan; follwed it by the
letter. I had my RNY 07/08/02 and have lost 119lbs in less than seven
months (I weighed 388 on the day of surgery and now weigh 269). I do use
the basic principals of the Atkin's diet, but I don't limit my carbs as
severely. I don't eat sweets, and I eat very little bread. I eat a lot of
meat and cheese. The one thing I do allow myself is a fair amount of
vegetables. My doctor says protein first, then veggies, then other foods if
you have room. I find this to be a very healthy and satisfying way of
eating. If I can do it, you can too!

I am sure that I will not be the last person to tell you that WLS is NOT
Atkins dieting! Atkins dieting nearly killed me (pancreatitis). WLS has
saved my life. If you follow your surgeons instructions you will be doing
the right thing. Going overboard with Atkins is not the way to go... I
would imagine that 99% of the people here have done Atkins at least once
and have gained everything back. Same with WW. That is why they are here.
No one has ever advocated haveing WLS then going with a strict Atkins
approach after. You just need to restrict your carbs sensibly. Do more
research. Good luck and be well!
