Question:
HOW MANY CALORIES ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE EATING ON A DAILY BASIS?
I AM 4 MONTHS OUT AND ONLY LOST 68 POUNDS, HAVING TROUBLE GETTING IN ENOUGH PROTEIN, HOW MANY CALORIES ARE WE SUPPOSED TO BE GETTING IN ON A DAILY BASIS? MAYBE I AM EATING TOO MUCH, I EXERCISE (WALKING & WEIGHT LIFING) 5-6 TIMES A WEEK, AM I DOING SOMETHING WRONG? I EAT 2-4 OZ. PER MEAL ABOUT 4 TIMES A DAY, I DRINK ONLY WATER, AND EAT NO SWEETS, CAN SOMEONE HELP ME OUT? ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE 4 MO. OUT AND ONLY LOST AROUND 68 POUNDS? — denise F. (posted on January 9, 2003)

Hi - Im only about 2 months out, but I think that I am having the same
problems. I lost very rapidly the first month - about 35 lbs and now I am
only losing about 1 lb per week, which puts me at a 38 lb loss. I also
drink my water (and only water) - i never eat sweets and workout 5-6/week
doing aerobics and lifting. I am not sure if I am just a slow loser or on
a plateau. Anyway - I hope you get the answer you want - I just wanted to
post and let you know that your not alone.

I don't think you should be dissapointed in your weightloss at all.
I had my surgery on 9-26-02 (about 3 1/2 months ago) and have lost between
70-75 pounds. I am elated!!! And I started out as a heavyweight. You are
doing everything right, it sounds like.
If you go to the weight calculator on this site and plug in your numbers,
you will see that at about 3-4 months the weightloss tapers off to only
10-12 pounds (or less) from here on out. I don't think you can expect to be
losing 20-30 pounds per month much past the first few months.
Keep up the good work and don't get discouraged.

My nutritionist said to expect to eat between 600 and 800 calories per day
for an average.

Denise, you and I had surgery the same day (8-15) so, we are actually a few
days short of 5 months. You should be on 1000-1100 calories a day by now.
If you are not, you need to up them. Congrats on your weight loss you are
doing WONDERFUL! Email me if you have any questions. (305/224/150).

Sounds like you're doing wonderfully!! I found that when I let refined
carbs back into my diet, my weight loss plateaued. Things like crackers
and potatoes go down very easily and I had to be careful not to eat too
many of them. Just a thought, but again sounds like you're doing great!

I agree with Heather, around 1000 calories a day is good for four months
out, especially given all that good exercise you're doing (good for
you!!).<P>As far as trouble with protein intake is concerned, try to
find a good protein shake. I couldn't make my daily protein goal without
my two protein shakes a day, not only because it's hard to eat that much
protein, but I'm just not THAT big a fan of protein foods. Congrats on
your weight loss ("only lost 68 pounds"? that's "only"
fantastic, girl!!), and good luck to you on your journey!

My surgeon told me that we should be eating between 1000 and 1400 calories
a day - absolutely no less than 1000.

Denise, what are you complaining about? Your weight loss is great. Just
think, if you hadn't had this surgery you would not have been able to lose
that much weight this fast, if at all. You can't compare yourself to
others, thankfully God made us all different. I am 2mos post op and have
lost 39lbs. Would I like it to be more? Sure, but realisticly I also know
that losing too fast is not healthy either. We need to be logical about
this because I know for me this is my last hope at losing weight and
keeping it off. Good Luck to you and may God continue to bless you.

Stop saying "ONLY LOST" X number of pounds. Would you have been
able to lose 68 pounds in 4 months without this surgery? People lose at
different rates, even those that start at the same height and weight, so
stop comparing yourself to others. 68 pounds is very good. It sounds like
you are doing the right things..I assume your 2-4 oz per meal concentrates
on protein? And that you are getting in 64 oz of water a day? If so, you
will continue to lose at your own rate. As for calories, doctors vary, but
at 4 months, mine was telling me 800 or so, but I think I was doing closer
to 1000.
