Question:
I need help with meal plans and eating
My dietician wasn't that good. she said full pureed liquids for 4 weeks.... try to get 60gm of protien in a day... that's it. so, does that mean I should eat all day long to get 60gm of protien in if I can only eat 2T at a time? I had high protien jello for breakfast... about 1/3cup I had 1 scrambled egg white and 1/2 slice fat free cheese for brunch I had 1/2c egg drop soup for lunch I had 1/4c egg salad for snack and 1/2c seafood soup for dinner... it was a bit thick as I pureed about 2 oz of salmon in it but I could still have sucked it through a straw if necessary. I am never full or hungry. I do have gas...moving around big time and a bit making it's way out but not much. I know I didn't get 60gm of protien today. I have tried 4 different protien drinks and they are all too yucky for me to tolerate yet. I am drinking water between meals... I don't feel like I can eat much more. Anyone have a good schedule they follow and would share here? Thanks! Lynn — Lynn S. (posted on December 8, 2002)

It sounds like you're making all the right choices. I am 10 weeks out
tomorrow, and I can't get in 60 grams of protein. I was told to do the best
I could to get it in, but not to worry if I didn't. my surgeon has been
doing this surgery for 10 years, and he said it has only been in the last 2
or 3 years that protein supplements have really been pushed.

Lynn, no need to worry just do the best you can for now, my doc says we
have enough stored protien for a good bit of time for our bodies to use,
although i would try to find a protien shake you like, they help alot with
energy and cravings, witch you probley don't have now but they do come and
when they do you need protien to help fight them off.

Hi! You don't mention how far out you are, but normally it takes a few
months to get to the 60g protein intake, so don't worry. You can't
possibly take in enough before then to get up there, unless you are really
supplimenting. You sound like you are doing great! If you have any other
questions, try calling the hospital that had you and ask to speak to a
staff dietician who has experience in this area. My hospital offered this
as a follow up on the phone at no charge. Best of luck! Renee D

You can get Protien drink called NITRO-TECH from GNC or any vitiamn place.
There are a couple diffetent flavors of this brand. I have tried different
ones and I like these the best. These are like clear colored liquid so you
can sup on the all day long which is just like water. They have no no carbs
and no sugar and they taste good. Each bottle has 40 grams of protien in
it. This is what my doctor suggest so I use these and it helps me so much.
I am only 13 days post opt. and I at least get that much in a day.

There are also some clear Koolaid looking drinks called Isopure Zero Carb
that come in 20 oz bottles and have 40 grams of protein in them. I used
these in the beginning-one bottle would last all day as I diluted it with
water, sometimes added crystal light to it, put it over ice and sipped on
it all day long. It was carried by Vitamin Shoppes. As for protein
shakes, try getting an unflavored or vanilla flavored powder. Isopure also
makes zero carb protein powder which I like. 1 scoop in a blender with
water and ice, some sweetener and frozen fruit (any kind), and you have a
delicious drink. Try using crushed pineapple in the can, and coconut
extract..you got a pina colada!! Once you can eat those 60+ grams of
protein, the supplements are not needed.
