Question:
Will my surgeon decide which procedure is best for me?
How will I determine which WLS is best for me? From what I understand, surgeons routinely perform one or the other..not both. And, does insurance usually approve one procedure more readily than the other? I don't expect my PCP to be very helpful in this area and I really want to set up a consultation with a surgeon but I don't know whether to call a 'DS' doc or an 'RNY' doc. Any input here will be greatly appreciated! — Sherry G. (posted on December 1, 2002)

Most docs seem to prefer to specialize in one or two procedures and some
prefer open, while some prefer the challenge of LAP. It is really up to
you to educate yourself about the type of procedure you want based on your
needs and challenges. If you have trouble with volume eating you may
prefer a banded surgery...but if you have trouble with volume and sweets
you may prefer RNY. Many swear by the DS and can still eat some sweets and
a lot of fats. Then you also need to find out which (if any) procedure(s)
your insurance covers. I know it's a lot of research on your part, but
it's your body and it gives you a lot of reflective time to make sure this
is what you really want for you. I would suggest that you visit The
American Society for Bariatric Surgery - http://www.asbs.org/ and read
about each of the procedures. They also list board certified surgeons by
state. Good luck as you begin this long journey.
