Question:
Can I keep my husbands insurance and purchase BC of California PPO?
My husbands insurance is great-besides the fact that it will not cover weight loss surgeries. So can I purchase Blue Cross of California PPO on the side to cover surgery in a couple of months. When I talked to a representative they asked if I was currently insured and didnt seem to care. Also, does anyone know the weight requirement for Blue Cross of California PPO plan. I am 215, BMI 36.6. Thanks Tyra. — Tyra G. (posted on November 5, 2002)

Tyra,
Yes, usually you can. But you may want to check out the requirments you
have to meet to be eligible for the surgery before you go through that
effort. At 215 pound and a low BMI, unless you have significant
comorbidities, you are likely not to qualify for the WLS anyway. GOod Luck
toyou! !

Tara, Yes, you can purchase your own insurance and keep hubby's. Your own
insurance will be considered your primary insurance. I too have BC/BS PPO
coverage on myself, through my job, and then A HMO with my husband. I'll be
using my own insurance. Also, check out the requirements. I had no problem
being approved.

Hi Tyra!! I have BC/BS PPO, and unless you have significant co-morbs, your
BMI has to be 40. Also, they will only let you do it lap if the doc agrees
to bypass less than 100cm...My doc, agreed, but told me that there was no
way to measure exactly, so he made the ins co happy. I also have ins with
my hubbin. He has BC/BS HMO. They have never had a problem with me having
two coverages, and to top that, two coverages within their company...have a
great day!! Ann
