Question:
Where do you find physical support for post surgery period?
I am still working on locating a surgeon, but live in a rural area, with insurance and hospital complications to resolve. If I have to drive several hundred miles for surgery, how do I get home, manage at home, and what about complications so far from experienced medical help? Would it be better to "visit my mom" for an extended pre/post surgical stay? It sounds like there are good surgeons and hospitals in Ft.Lauderdale, FL. Any input would help, Thanks, Dawn H, WV — Dawn H. (posted on July 28, 2002)

I had a wonderful surgeon in the Gainesville, Ga. area- Dr. Dan Proctor.
The support program he and others have put together is top-notch. You
might want to check him out. When I have gone to support group meetings, I
have heard none of the stories about things that have gone wrong. I
absolutely could NOT have made the drive home by myself (hour and half),
nor could I have taken care of myself for the first three or four days at
home. I slept in the recliner and my DH slept or my best friend slept on
the sofa for three nights. I would think, unless you're Wonder Woman, that
you'll need help. Good luck!

I had to drive 8 hours to have my WLS surgery. As long as you have someone
to drive you and remember to take a pillow to hold on to the trip wasn't
too bad at all. As far as follow-up. I spoke with my primary physician
before I left to make sure that he was up to speed on this type of surgery.
I was surprised to find out that he has 3 other patients that have had it,
so he was great!! He has taken care of all of my aftercare, including the
2 week post-op check up. I would sudgest that you talk with your primary,
see if he is up to speed on Obesity issues. If he isn't then you should
find a new doctor that is. Good luck!!!
