Question:
Should I?
I just got a new job that I will be starting this Monday. If everything goes as planned and I am approved for this surgery then hopefully it will be done in October or November. This job is for only 6 months, but should I tell my employer about the possibility of having this? There will be times that I have to drive 2 hrs for my appts. before the surgery and I will have to have the WHOLE day off instead of just an hr. What would be ya'll's advice in this situation? Hubby says no and just say something when the time comes. — dixieb (posted on July 27, 2002)

I agree with your hubby, I wouldn't say anything until the time comes, I'm
sure you'll be approved and on your way to a new healthier life style
soon!!! good luck!!!

Well... I guess I agree w/your husband. I just started a new career and
was totally up front with them before I accepted the position. They seemed
very friendly and glad that they knew what to expect from me. I tell them
when the appt's are and when surgery is. I feel better knowing I am not
hiding anything from them. Plus, they will benefit from my being healthier
too - so, I told them at the beginning. Heather

Sorry, but I've got to come down on the side of being honest with your
employer. You're going into a limited-duration job (6 months) and you
know (but the employer doesn't) that you will be missing several days
pre-op and probably a month or more after the surgery.
<p>
I was totally upfront about the surgery with my employer - telling them
months before my initial consultation with my surgeon - and they've been
nothing but supportive throughout the whole process.
