I'm still pre-op, but surgeon and his nutritionist encourage water
loading...it was the first I'd heard of it!

www.oregoncenter.com and read about it in the blue booklet link. I hope
that is the right link, I am going from memory.
I always water load. I drink at least 10 oz. of water prior to eating
(about ten minutes before the meal)and then I drink nothing for 1 1/2
hours. Of course, I hydrate all day long. My 60 oz. are in by noon and I
try for 120 oz or so. My weight loss is -140 lbs. I was openRNY 6-20-01.

b.j. i beg to differ with u on the comment u made about not feeling hunger
at 3 months out. i am 3 months post op open rny/silastic ring & i have
experienced hunger since week 2. no, it is not head hunger! it is my tummy
growling & getting an ache just like it did before surgery. if i wait
to eat i hiccup. once i eat, i feel much better & my tummy is very
content. there r other people in my support group who say the same thing.
54 lbs & 48 3/4 inches gone forever!!!

Hi All, just wanted to add my opinion in this...I went to the doctors the
other day, and he told me NOT to drink a large amount of water (10oz for
example) really fast (now I know what water loading is) anyways he said it
will stretch the pouch. This makes sense since you are over filling your
pouch up (please dont say water runs right through becuz if it did, then
people wouldnt be using it as a source to fill up on), although water
loading may be a good way to satify hunger its only for a small amount of
time, if this stretches the pouch its forever..so i ask which is better,
water loading or satifying the hunger by eating a small protien based meal?
I say eat the small meal. Drink lots of water through out the day. and
exercise!!

I would also have to disagree with BJ, or the article. I became really
hungry at 2 months post-op. And it wasn't just a slight hunger, hunger
came back with a vengeance!! I feel hungrier now than as a pre-op. And it
comes more often during the day. It is actually very annoying and I feel
like I am always having to think of what I am going to eat next. However,
after starting my protein supplements I have found more satiety, thank
goodness. Personally I don't waterload. I don't want to stretch my pouch
and my intake is still very limited. Maybe when I am further out, and able
to eat a higher volume of food, then I will consider loading up before I
eat. 4.5 months out.

I want to clarify my 10 oz. of water prior to eating comment below...I
hydrate all day long with "sipping." About a half hour prior to
my meal, I drink a weak decaf hot tea. Wait about ten minutes and start
sipping water. About ten oz. of water. It may take up to 20 min. to get it
all in. But my LAST SIP ends ten minutes prior to my meal. I do not drink
with my meals, nor do I drink for 1 1/2 - 2 hours after a meal. It helps me
to eat a lot less at my meal. I am pleased with -140 lbs. since June 20th.
Dr. Flanagan is my Doctor and he also published the articles. By the way, I
have experienced hunger (that is not head hunger) as early as one month
out! It is unusual, but it can happen. It happened to me. That is one
reason I am dilligent about my protein, vitamins and water :-)

i am so glad to see other posties have experienced very real hunger so soon
after surgery as i have. i received a nasty email after my post showed up
that was totally inappropriate in its tone. just because a dr writes an
article about something doesnt mean its written in stone. we r all
individuals & nothing is going to apply to 100% of us.
