Question:
I have to use the CPAP at the hospital and I haven't been at home

I got my CPAP at the beginning of Feb. 2002. I used it for about 2 nites (full face mask) and then got one of the worst sore throats. I was sick about 2 weeks. I don't know if this was coincidence or not. Anyhow, I went to the Dr. to get my date (3/5/02)- 9 days away, and he said I have to use my CPAP even though I told him it wasn't working out. So, I was thinking maybe I should start using it to get use to it but now I am scared I will get the sore throat and get sick and the surgery will be cancelled. When I was using it, it really dried out my mouth. I know that after surgery the mouth is dry anyway and I am worried that the CPAP will just make it worse. Any suggestions? I know the nose only mask would probably be more comfortable but I couldn't use it. I tried and I couldn't breathe (my nose is always stopped up) and my chest started hurting. Also, I asked the original sleep Dr. about a humidifier when I initially got the machine and he said I really didn't need it. Plus now I feel it is too late to get any more equipment. Any suggestions and comments on similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!    — Daphne S. (posted on February 25, 2002)

I was like you, never did tolerate the thing. My surgeon was GREAT, he put me n pulse ox monitor and a higher flow of qxygen, and I never used the Bi Pap. How high is your pressure? Mine was 17 which can be a danger, of inflating the intestine and causing a leak. I would probably not risk a cold and deal with the thing as you have to. But do inform your surgeon... All this messing about was WELL worth it, I have lost 123 pounds in 7 months:)

I work for a DME company and deal w/ CPAP's all the time. See if your doctor will order a humidfier for the CPAP. It should help with the dryness you experience

Daphane~ I would let your sleep doctor know that you need a humidifier. When you asked him before, it was prior to your use of the machine. Now, you have a reason to ask for one. I have the DA*N C-pap, too and my surgeon and pulminologist both said I need to use it in the hospital. You would be safer than sorry. It's better to have too much air in the lungs, than not enuf. SMILE. I can't wait till I can give this machine back to Cigna! Congrats on your date and good luck!

You can buy a humidifier at any drug store. They run anywhere from $30-65.00. They help a lot. You might want to try that. Not using the machine can also make you sick. People with sleep apnea don't rest or sleep as well and lack of sleep can bring about sickness.

My open RNY is scheduled for March 19 and I, too, have a new CPAP machine. It is definitely taking some getting used to. I have a humidifier, so I am not experiencing the dryness. Maybe the therapist who fitted your mask would have some suggestions about the dryness and your stopped up nose. It might be worth a try to get a humidifier and try again. Since they are going to want you to wear it after the surgery, you might want to get acustomed to it in these last few nights before surgery. Here's to a speedy recovery for both of us!!!

I use a CPAP and a Heated humidifier. Try to get your DME to get you a heated humidifier, it makes a world of difference.
