Question:
I'm still having IV site pain 4 weeks post-op. Is this normal?
My RYGB was 4 weeks ago, but I find that places near two IVs were on my arm are still tender/painful. For example, I had an IV on the back of my hand, but there is a painful "knot" (clot?) about two inches below that site. I yelp when my toddler brushes up against it. Ditto for a spot near my elbow (from another IV site). Is it normal to experience residual IV site pain? Thanks for any input. — Felissa L. (posted on November 7, 2001)

After I had a c-section I had the same thing happen. It turned out to be an
infection and I was given antibiotics. Hope this helps.

Post op, I had the same experience with a vein on the back of my hand where
my IV was. It was extremely sore and had a "knot". It actually
looked like it had been severed and there was two parts. I remember the
pain lasting for some time, but to be honest I don't remember how long. In
fact, until I read your post, I had completely forgotten about it. I guess
it went away and I failed to notice. LOL! I know that it hurts and I hope
it goes away soon! Shelley

I had the same problem with the IV site in my hand because they left the IV
in after it started getting blocked. I had fluid buildup in the hospital
until finally they noticed and took it out. I then had pain and this
"knot" for some time. About a week after discharge, I even
noticed this red rash starting up my hand from the site. I went to the ER
fearing blood poisoning or something. But it was nothing abnormal. The
hospital said just to keep putting a hot wet cloth on the area as needed to
relieve discomfort and the bump and knot would eventually go away. It took
about a month and a half, but it finally went away. I just have a little
dark skin there now, like a pimple scar. Best of luck.

Thanks so much for your replies. I feel *much* better about this now,
knowing that this is normal. I'll try the hot compress. Thanks again!
