Question:
How can you1know HOW many grams of protein
When you have 1-2 oz. of tuna/protien how do you know how may grams of protien it has, since you aren't eating the whole can/ even 1/2 of the can, or meat. I know the can will say , but how do you exactly know how many grams are in 1 oz of turkey or whatever. My surgeon make us measure 2 oz. of meat/protein 3X a day. 2nd day post op. He doesn't do liquid diets/ mushie diets. — Cindee A. (posted on November 4, 2001)

Well, if the can has 6 oz and one can = 6g, then one oz would be 1g. And
you'd take 50% of that, to cover for your malabsorption. Or an egg, for
example. I think it's 6g. If you could eat the WHOLE egg, you could
probably count 3 as protein. So, just think, only 20 eggs per day to get
60g protein! LOL! That's why my protein is chocolate. And my egg is
entertainment.

In my support group meeting last month, the dietician told us that one
ounce of meat = 7 grams of protein. Another person told me that one large
egg is equal to a 2 ounce serving. Hope this helps!

The amount of malabsorption you have depends on the procedure and you much
intestine you have had bypassed. My surgeon told me with the 125 cm that I
had bypassed, that I can count on absorbing ~85% of the protein and
calories that I eat. To make the math easier on my feeble little brain, I
just assume that I'm getting 3/4 of the stated amount, and treat the extra
as "insurance". I'm down 52 lbs and 43.75" at 7 weeks out,
and have tons of energy, so I must be doing SOMETHING right! :-)

I bought a book entitled "The NutriBase Guide to Protein,
Carbohydrates, Fat"... it breaks down every food imaginable (including
restaurant, brand name, generic, etc) and charts the content. I am not a
huge fan of my protein shakes, so I went looking for other sources. You'd
be surprised at the high protein count in unexpected foods! Best of luck!
