Question:
Undecided

My insurance have approved me for gastric bypass but I am undecided if I will still pursue the operation. I am 40 lbs. overweight and am thinking if I just continue to diet and exercise to lose the 40 lbs. I have lost 22 lbs. over the last 8 months with diet and exercise. Any suggestions or thoughts, I will appreciate it.    — vxbabi (posted on January 9, 2011)

Did I read it correct that you only have 40 lbs. to lose. What is your BMI.How will insurance approve you if you are only 40 lbs. overweight.

My bmi is 35 and I have high blood pressure and sleep apnea as co-morbidities. That I had a bmi of 39 a year ago but with diet and exercise, I got down to a bmi of 35. Is it worth having the surgery?

Congradulations on losing 22lbs. It isn't easy and it's no small feat. May I make a suggestion? Did you ever think of something like Weight Watcher? It's much less invasive than doing wls. WLS is only a tool for losing weight, not a magic cure. You are going to have to diet and excercise before and after the procedure anyway. I don't mean to sound horrible but I had to many complications after my surgery that I'm sorry that I had the surgery.

RNY sounds a bit drastic for only 40lbs to lose. Have you considered banding instead?

My insurance will only pay for gastric bypass. Plus heard of some unpleasant things with lap band such as infection in the port site, erosion and slippage.
