Question:
Has anyone noticed problems with memory since RNY surgery?
It's been 10 months since my RNY and have lost about 95% of my excess body weight. I take my physician prescribed vitamins most everyday but lately, for the past two months or so I feel like I am in the early stages of Alzhimers. I am having problems remembering what people tell me and other short-term memory issues. Has anyone else experienced this and what have you done about it? — rkurquhart (posted on January 29, 2010)

Hi, I have not had surgery yet, but my neighbor had RNY. She told me when
she found out about my upcoming surgery all about her different problems.
She described what you just said, and found out she had a vitamin or
mineral deficiency. I can't remember which one. She just wasn't absorbing
one properly so they gave her a liquid one. In either case having a talk
with your Doctor and a blood panel done would probably be a good idea.

I believe lack of B12 causes this. You should get some labwork done as soon
as possible. Ask him to do a full blood panel. We have more in depth
labwork done than the non wls patient, so if you have the list give it to
him to make sure he runs everything.

memory loss is a sympton of low B12. Have your B12 bloodwork checked.

I'm RNY plus Banding, 4 years out almost and have had no problems. From day
one, I've on top of taking not only the multivitamin but extra B12, a B
complex, Iron, Calcium, Vitamin D3 & C. The first year out I had Blood
Labs done every three months. And now every 6 months. All is good and limit
carb intake to 15 grams a day.

one of the nutritionists i saw said something they are finding is that
people that have had gastric bypass are coming back w/a slight copper
deficiency and that can cause alzheimers symptoms. Hope you get it all
worked out. Good job on your weightloss!

I feel I have memory loss but bloods are totally fine, including B12. I
can't decide if it is age or surgery??? I would like to know more about
the copper idea.

I have short term memory loss too names are gone as fast as I hear them. I
have both B12 and Iron absorption problems. I get B12 shots and Iron
infusions when they are to low. It does get better when my vitamins are
under control but it is annoying I'm 6 years out RNY. Good Luck Anna

if your blood work is out of normal range this can happen and if your blood
sugar is dropping it will cause this. check into it!!
