Question:
Please Help

I had my surgery on 8/14/09 and since then I have lost 61 pounds. I was sick with 2 peristomal ulcers and then my DR had to dialate my opening. I was throwing up so much stomach acid it was horrible. At times i felt like my i messed up by having the surgery. Then about 2 weeks ago i felt better than i have since the surgery. Then 2 days later i went to the ER because I thought i broke my foot and was told that i had GOUT. Has anyone gotten gout after surgery? I was wondering how to make the swelling go down by doing home rememadies because all the meds are NSAIDS and they are tearing my pouch up. Thanks so much.    — nik2909 (posted on October 20, 2009)

I would call your surgeon and explain the situation to him. He may be able to give you something for your gout. We aren't supposed to have any kind of NSAIDS because they can cause ulcers. Did you let the doctor know you weren't supposed to have NSAIDS? Before I get a prescription, I always remind my doc about the NO NSAIDS and there has always been something that could be given to me without them. Hope this helps a little bit

Always remind any doctor you see that you have had weight loss surgery. If they are not familiar with contraindications of medicines in regards to WLS patients, and prescribe something you aren't sure about, check with your surgeon. If you know the prescription will cause problems, let them know why, and ask for something else. Give your family physician your surgeon's business card, and encourage him to call him with any questions regarding your care. Also, make sure you update your surgeon whenever you have had a medical problem and let him know what was done about it, esp. if you've had problems as a result. I don't know how often you see your surgeon, but as a Lap-Band patient, I still see mine every 1-2 months. I'm 5 years post-op, and am at goal weight. Remember that you are Your OWN best patient advocate. God Bless.

Whenever taking any kind of Meds. Make sure to drink a full glass of water so it goes through the stomach and dissolves in your system and not your stomach!
