Question:
I have to order a dress and I'm not sure what size!!!
I need a little bit of help. I had lap RNY 8/4/08 and I have lost 90 pounds. I was a size 26 and now I am a size 14. My problem is that I am standing up in a wedding 9/26/09. I have put off ordering my bridemaid dress as long as I can I have to order it this weekend. The women at the bridal shop said they can only take it in 2 sizes before it gets to deformed. What should I do, order the size they tell me and pray they can take it in? Order it a size or two smaller and pray its not to small? I'm still losing about 5-8 lbs per month but that isn't a guarantee and I'm not sure what to expect. Please help its a lot of money and I really don't want to look silly!! — amylbarron (posted on March 12, 2009)

that is a long time a head. order a little smaller than they suggest and I
think you will be fine.

if you have to order it early, I would order a size or 2 smaller, you
aren't that far out, and I lost weight for the first year. I went from a 26
to a 12 in a year.so if you have lost that much already, I am assuming you
will lose until August. something else can you order 2 different sizes and
send one back, lol.

I was right where you are when I decided that losing 3-4 lbs a month was
not going to make a huge differnce in size and I went out and bought an
entire new wardrobe in size 12...I got down to a size 6-8 within a few
months...Then my body shifted...muscles filled in I went back up 8 lbs and
settled in an 8 or a 10...The thing is that once you become a smaller
person...8-10 pounds can be an entire SIZE! Where before it was a matter
of drinking a large glass of water and retaining it! LOL Where I am right
now...if I lose about 5 lbs I will fit in my smaller size jeans...In the
summer I am active and my weight drops a few lbs...Winter I tend to be less
active and gain a few...It averages out...So I have my fat jeans and my
skinny jeans!
If you get the dress and it's too small they can also put in panels to give
you a little room too. With the wedding being so far away...Those 4-5 lbs a
month can REALLY add up and make you a teeny little person! It's a tough
call...I lost 150 pounds and I never thought I'd get passed 100 lbs! You
still have some good time and numbers! You're going to be small. I'd say
you will probably make it a 6 or 8 at the most if you are still losing 5-8
lbs monthly...Another helpful idea too is that we tend to have a lot of
skin bulk and a good pair of control pantihose and a little help from a
nice tight "girdle type waist cincher thingie" can smooth you out
to a smaller size as well if the dress is a little snug. Good luck!

I you are a 14 now, I would order a size 10, and if its not the size you
need by then you can have it altered. You know you won't be getting any
bigger atleast

I'm in the same boat - had RNY on 8/27/08 and am getting married in
November...I'm waiting until the last minute possible to order my dress,
which they said is 4 months before. They said they can take it in 2 sizes.
I'm going to order one size smaller than I am at that point. You don't
want to go too small, because its hard to add material if needed. I don't
know what your body type is, but I'm big in the chest area, and they
haven't been shrinking much lately, so I want to make sure the dress fits
in that area, then they can take the rest in. Good luck!

Oh, Amy, who would have thought we'd have this problem!! My nephew is
getting married in August and I'm waiting until the last minute to get a
dress (I'm not in the party)! Order a size smaller but not too small. It
can be altered smaller but not as easy to alter larger. Plus it probably
would look better if it were a little big than if it were i little too
small. Have fun at the wedding!

I have been in a few weddings and I have never had to order my bridesmaid
dress six months before the wedding. Be a little pushy at the bridal
shoppe, maybe even call the designer with your concerns and see if it won't
buy you another month or two to order the right size. With our bodies a
lot can change in six months.

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I have tried to put it off as
long as possible and it isn't the bridal shop that is making me order the
dress now it is the bride. She wanted the dressed ordered in January. She
is not being very flexible. I think I am going to order a smaller size but
I am going to talk to the manufacturer to see if I should go 1 size or 2
smaller. You are all right, I would rather have it be too big then to
small. Thanks again.

i would order it 2 sizes smaller. they can let out the seams and add fabric
if necessary. they can also take it in the event it's too big still. i
would also hold off ordering it until june if possible. when i got married
it took 6-8 wks for the dresses to come in. if you order in june this still
buys you some time in case there are some delays. or, how about finding a
good seamstress who can make the dress for you 1 mo b/4 wedding. good
luck!

this is a tough call. i suggest talking with your dietary professional and
surgeon. they may be able to tell you how much weight you will lose before
the wedding? is there any other style you could wear that the shop could
make more to your size as the wedding gets closer? good luck.
