Question:
feel hot during/after meals

I had my RNY in 12/05 and have maintained my 105 lb weight loss (give or take 5 lbs) since. For the last couple of months I've been experiencing an unusual symptom and I don't know if it's related to surgery, but since it's food related I have to consider that it might be. During and after most meals I'm breaking out into a sweat and am uncomfortably warm. It passes after 20 min or so. Has anyone else had this happen? Any clues what might be going on?    — blues-singer (posted on March 10, 2008)

first thing that comes to my mind, is sugar level; do you have any way of checking that? i dont mean to imply that you are diabetic, but you could be having some low sugar or high sugar issues.

This is a sign of dumping. You either eating too much or too many carbs or sugars. dont forget carbs turn into sugar. It happens to me. I eat too much or something I shouldnt and 20 min. to a 1/2 hr later I am hot and sweaty and feel like crap. Eat slower. I swear once you have gastric bypass you never get to eat a full complete hot meal. But I would rather be skinny.

I am diabetic, although well under control. I haven't checked specifically during the overheating, but will do that to rule it out. I've had dumping prior and this feels different to me. Furthermore, it doesn't seem to be related to the content or quantity of what I'm eating at all. It's happened with just bacon and eggs - almost carb-free.

I am 4 1/2 years post op and that happens to me sometimes. Mostly in the morning after I eat or if I eat something that causes the dumping.

I'M A FAST EATER ALWAYS HAVE BEEN AND I KNOW THE HOT FLASHES FROM EATING TO FAST ARE DIFFERENT FROM SUGAR RELATED HOT FLASHES. MY SUGAR IS FINE DURING THESE TIMES.

Low blood sugar give that feeling, but if it is after a meal and since you had an RNY it sounds like Dumping from too much sugar or fat. Are you eating something with a lot of sugar in it?

I had surgery in Sept 06...I have the same thing...It is not related to carbs. it is after anything I eat...even all protein... I have the same thing...I was going to post the same question... I can't figure it out... I have had dumping and this is not the normal sugar or carb dumping...I do tend to eat fast, so it may be related to that like one of the posts said but I am also stumped...

I can relate to that. But I have realized what it is that triggers this, be aware of what your eating and how often. Waiting too long brings your blood sugar way down and the minute you eat, it skyrockets. Another thing could be your sugar intake. Even some starchy veggies have too much sugar and carbs, some fruits and ALL junk food. Just be aware of what is triggering this. Keep a journal, it could help.

This is called "Dumping" and, yes, it is a side affect from the surgery. You are eating portions that are too big for you and/or there is too much of a sugar/starch content in the foods you are eating. The bad news is you will have to contend with this for the rest of your life. I am 7 years post-op and still suffer from "dumping" from time to time. I usually do not feel good till I take a quick nap. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] I am always willing to answer any and all questions. Not only do I have knowledge from my surgery but I also have knowledge from my mother, my brother and my aunt. We have all had the surgery and some of us suffer from some things and some of us don't. So chances are if it hasn't happened to me than I know about it because of them.

Although rare, it is possible that your hot spells are attributable to a circulatory issue (arteries serving the pouch and intestines can be clogged like arteries leading to the heart) or could be a sign of a fistula. If your doctor hasn't suggested it already, gently suggest if he wouldn't want to perform a CT scan of your abdomen.

Thanks for posting this question, I was having the same problem. I thought it was 'dumping', but sometimes I just get these hot flashes w/o the tired sluggish feeling. Sometimes when I drink coffee I notice the hot flashes immediately, and I have to turn a fan on. It also happens when I eat certain foods or eat too fast. Thanks for all the information also. Lynette

Hi, I too have this happen. It happens to me every time I eat. No matter what the food. I can have tuna only and get these hot flashes. My doctor said he doesn't understand why. I have dumped on sugars and starches and this feels the same except with true dumping I get so sleepy and ill feeling but this is just uncomfortably hot. Robin

You might be eating those things that have too much sugar in them. Have you expereinced dumping syndrome yet? If that is not the case, have your blood drawn to see where you are deficit and go from there. Your doctor should be able to read it and tell you something from the results. Good Luck

I didn't have this happen for atleast the first year and now if I have too much sugar or something high in fat, especially ice cream, I get hot and sweaty and sick to my stomach for about a half hour.
