Question:
GAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had the duodenal switch 12 years ago and I am lactose intolerant. Ever since the surgery I have frequent TERRIBLE, NASTY gas. I've tried the Dairy-ease pills, Beano and a Kroger brand of gas relief pills and NOTHING helps. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can take? It doesn't matter what I eat, I still have terrible gas.    — roselady (posted on January 24, 2008)

My wife had a similar surgery in 1980. She had terrible gas ever since. She had a revision to the RNY this last summer. I know what you mean about the gas. We used to joke here and say the gas could remove wall paper.

Try Gas X with Malox. Works wonders for me.

Do come over to the DS forum! Many of us experience gas. The methods you tried didnt work for me either. It sounds like you need probiotics. Do you take them? I use them and they help. You get it in the health food store or online. Primal Defense, while pricey has been worth it for me. THe last member that said you could get your DS revised to an RNY? You MUST be kidding! Go to the Grads board and see how many RNYers with regain are seeking the DS! LOL Have you been successful with DS? ANy other problems with it? Would love to hear about your DS experience. Come to the DS forum- youll get lotsa lovin over there!!

Please visit the July 2007 archive on my blog. There are instructions there on how to get and use flagyl. It has been a miracle cure for many of us DSers. A revision to RNY for gas with a DS?! My gawd, talk about chopping off your leg to cure a sprained knee! Geeze, louise! PM me and I'll get ya fixed up!

Often post-ops are tempoarily lactose intolerant -- sounds like yours was more long term. I found that the more 'processed' the dairy or the higher the fat content, the better. I use 1/2 and 1/2 on my cereal and can eat cheese with no issues at all. As for gas... there are lot's of things you can do. It's a malabsorption issue and both RNY/DS can have problems with it. You may need probiotics or a round of Flagyl. (Flagyl was perfect for me and worked almost instantly -- 2 days! My poop has almost NO smell now.) It sounds like you may have bacteria overgrowth and need Flagyl, since your diet doesn't effect the gas. Visit the DS Forum you'll find lots of help/ideas there. Wow -- 12 year post op... very cool. Who was your surgeon... was it Dr Hess?

Who is your surgeon? You should go back to him/her and have a check-up and see what's up. Actually, every WLS patient should keep in touch with their doc, no matter how long ago it was.

The similar surgery Mrs. Chambers had must've been the old JIB or BPD (without the Duodenal Switch) since the first DS wasn't done until 1988. The malabsorption and gas/diarrhea issues with those older surgeries were greatly improved with the DS.

I think gas is a problem with all WLS to be honest with you. Everyone on the DS board has recommended http://www.devrom.com/ProductCart/pc/viewCat_h.asp?idCategory=3 I haven't tried it yet but I'm going to. I had 3 years post op RNY and seeking a revision to DS. Please think long and hard before you revise to RNY that won't make your gas go away! Hang in there!

Previous posters please humor me...isn't Flagyl what they treat certain bacterial infections with? One condition that pops to mind is the guys that come into our ER with genital issues (think along the lines of an STD). Not making fun of but the curious side of me had to ask! Back to the original poster...look in to chlorophylll. It is a plant extract that take the stink out of gas. It takes a couple of days of taking it to work, but it sure does work well. It can be found at health stores like GNC. As with any new med or supplement be sure to run it by your doctor. I must also note that products like Gas X and Malox actually promote farting. They work by drawing out painfull gas from the intestines/colon into a passable form. Hope this helps.-Heather

I had RNY, not DS. Same problem as you though. Nothing stops the gas -- NOTHING! I read in these pages that Beano with Gas-X works. NOPE! Not for me. My only solution around the house is to keep plenty of scented candles on board. In public, crinkle your nose, look all around with an accusatory look like the others about you are doing, and hope for the best when they finally discover it's YOU after all. ;-) Good luck!!

*Followup to my previous response.* After reading some of the others' responses (above), I did a Google search for "Flagyl". Please read the comments on side effects at the following Askapatient.com link <http://www.askapatient.com/viewrating.asp?drug=12623&name=FLAGYL> before you go with that stuff. ALL medications have side effects but this one looks particularly nasty. Admittedly, I have no personal experience with Flagyl.

Lots of good answers here.. Flagyl would work well. I am a DS'er and know others who have had good luck with a round of Cipro too.. like me.. :) I had a nasty cold... doc gave me Cipro and DH wanted to know what I did dif as little to no gas. Other great products are Just a Drop for controling odor in the commode and Bard Medi-Aire Odor Eliminator. I think it is a trial error thing... Probiotics are essential....finding the one that works for you. Ginger <><
