Question:
DS's in the Midwest -- is there an experienced surgeon in our area?
I am in WI and becoming increasingly interested in the DS versus RNY surgery. I am a self-pay so I do not have to content with the whim of the insurance companies -- just shelling out the dough! Anyway, I was interested if anyone had surgery in WI, MN, WI, IN, IL, OH, KY, or TN. I have looked into Dr. Baltasar in Spain, but would also like to see what options are more local. Most of the doctors I have researched on OH have limited (fewer than 20) DS's under their belt. I was hoping for someone with a bit more experience, and someone that would do the DS LAP. Thanks so much for listening :) — jennawoods (posted on April 28, 2006)

Jennifer, your best source of physician info is over at
www.duodenalswitch.com which is a DS specific site, run by a post -op - her
list is up to date and thorough. Good luck.

Hey Jennifer,
If you're looking for a Lap DS, I'm not sure you're going to find that in
the Midwest. I think most of the more experienced Midwest DS surgeons are
doing open procedures. If you want LapDS in the states - then you should
look into the Rabkins in San Francisco, or Gagner in NYC. Both have done
multiple thousands of Lap procedures! (Although Rabkins offer a
hand-assisted Lap, not purely lap procedure.)
I'm biased - I'll admit it :) - but I think Dr. Baltasar is a pretty cool
guy! If you haven't found the web pages yet - there is www.drbaltasar.com
(Dr. Baltasar's web site) and then www.bodybybaltasar.com (a web site by
Baltasar patients). We also have a Yahoo group that you can reach over at
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/baltasar-duodenalswitch/
And, of course, if I can answer any questions, let me know, okay?
Blessings,
dina

Gary Anthone is in Omaha and has been doing them since the early 90's, at
least. He WAS in San Francisco, in case the name sounds familiar to
anyone. I don't know if he does lap or open.

Jennifer,
One MOST important item you need to understand. If you go out of the
country or use a doctor for another state, most if not all surgerons will
not talk with you. I know of a number of WL patients that I have spoken
with, and they are having problems now finding a surgeon that will help
them after surgery from another surgeon..Good Luck

FYI -- Don't worry about finding a local doctor to help you post-op. I had
my surgery in Brazil and talked with both my PCP (who was very supportive
of my decision) and a local excellent RNY doc who believes that the DS is a
great surgery just doesn't have the time to train to learn it as his RNY
business is booming -- but he said he'd be happy to help me in the unlikely
event that there were complications that required surgery. If insurance
would have covered me, Dr Anthone in Omaha would have been my first choice.

Weiss Memorial Hospital in Chicago ( a University of Chicago hospital -
which has one of the top med schools in the US) has Doctors who do several
procedures and eval each patient individually for which surgery is right
for that person, I know they do DS, RNY and bands.
They seemed to have a very comprehensive program. 1-800- 534-1234 I heard
some of the docs from there speak at a seminar and I was highly impressed.

I also highly recommend Dr. John Maguire. He's moved hospitals and is now
at Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. His practice is called Premier
Bariatrics Associates. He is, in my opinion - THE BEST WLS surgeon out
there. He is very quite, but really cares about his patients - it's not
fake. I had RNY with him and he is now revising my RNY to a DS. Please
check him out. You can google him and find his new web site. Good luck.
