Question:
cognitive changes

I had a sleeve gastrectomy over a year. agoI have noticed I'm not as sharp as usual...Problems are apparent at work...organization,problems ,solving problems, memory, sometimesI can't find a word when I express myself.I take all suppliments, my lab work is normal.PLEASE VG people tell me if you have had similar problems.I'm scared and think my supervisor at work has picked up on this.    — gay56- (posted on January 31, 2010)

I have the same sense, though different surgery. I am taking all my supplements; bloods are good. I am beginning to wonder if it is age-related or perhaps even lack of super-vigilance because of the anxiety of obesity? I wonder if we used to be hyper-attentive out of necessity?

This is very odd you have sent this out now, I too have problems. I had my surgery (RYN) August 2009, and I am having the same issues. Someone said it maybe the lack of carbs, I am at a loss too.

I have noticed the same and am 19 months out of RNY. It drives me nuts! I had mini strokes years ago (in my early 30's and am 45 now..)I was worrying it had to do with that... I have to stop and think of words at times, or will say one word when I meant another. Very Frustrating. My labs are all good and I take my supplements religiously. I get all my proteins etc, and have maintained a 120 lb weight loss for over 9 months. I find I am only sharp in little waves ...I hope we can find out if this is surgery related. I noticed about the same time that my eyes don't see like before either, but think its age and computers..lol Keep us posted on what you find out! Thanks for the question! hugs,Kim

Did you have your b12 and iron checked? I had the same situation a decade ago..lost one job due to my brain just not functioning..turns out that I was severely anemic - I had/have Pernicious Anemia. But then 4 years later it started again and I had become hypothyroid. Scary to lose the ability of being "sharp" and watching it happen and no clue as to why. Best wishes for a speedy conclusion. Cheers, Tee

There are other things that aren't checked often.. So ALL of the B's? B1 included? Copper isn't checked often and has neurological implications. Also, if you are taking high dose folic acid, it can impair testing diagnostic for b12 -- so you could be masking a b12 deficiency -- you need a mma test to check for a b12 deficiency if you are taking high dose folate.

I had the VSG surgery 18 months ago. I too have noticed at times that I'm not as sharp as usual. But I attributed it to my age rather than the surgery. I am 55 years young. But, I have noticed that if I don't get in all of my protein grams that I am really sluggish and my energy level drops. But as far as the sharpness.....I have read several articles about it being related to the B vitamins. They are the core of our central nervous system. I take the liquid vitamin B as I know that I don't absorb the vitamin B properly in pill form. You might up your vitamin B intake with a liquid B and see if this helps. God Bless...

Well, I don't wish any ill on anyone, but it is good to know that I am not alone in this. I had the sleeve done six months ago and am having the same memory problems. I do know that mini strokes can cause this, but I have had had none. It is a scary situation that I thought might be age, I am 60. I tested high for B12. Any other ideas or comments are surely welcome. Best wishes to all!

WOW!!! Me too.... I thought it was only me.. I heard the B-12's are really important for that. I am struggling at work, stop mid sentence searching for a word. I see it in my job... driving me crazy. keep me posted!

I was having this problem but started hormone therapy and it has resolved nicely. So for me it appears to be age related. Have you had hormaone levels checked?

I am pre-surgery 64 days before RNY. I have cognitive changes and it is prevalent at times. I have hypothyroid and severe Vitamin D deficiency. The D may be the answer for me as my doc said up the D and the thoughts and processes are back to where It should be. But I have had this problem since childhood, I rely on my friend to review my past with me when I want to go back. Could also be a selective thing, I thought; if it doesn't interest me I don't pay attention, but yea, I do have to write it down or nevermind. Whatever I am doing is working as I continue to move up the ladder one step at a time :-)

Thank you for all your input. What is the amount of copper you recomended? I choise the VG because there was no vitamin absorption issues (so I was told). I'm very down about this. I work in the medical field and have to be sharp at all times.Anymore ideas or similar experiences please respond. Thanks and blessings to all

I've had that linguistic abnormality all my adult life -- not being able to find words. For me it's always seemed like a focus problem -- too many thoughts crowding my mind at the same time. Can't get the words out before another thought comes rushing through. I'm just 2-1/2 months post-RNY, and haven't noticed any difference.
