Question:
5 weeks post op and having problems keeping anything down

I had a laproscopic rny gb. I am having problems with nausea and vomiting, it seems that anything I eat or drink just wants to come back up. I am not meeting my fluid and protein requirements. Doctors are telling me everything is fine, that I am eating wrong things, but I can't tolerate anything even the protein products. Any advice or help I would appreciate it!!    — crazeepandu (posted on March 25, 2007)

I am sorry you are having a tough time. Please beg your dr to check you for a stricture. My girlfriend had one 5 weeks po and was quite miserable for a while she had also developed an ulcer. Please tell your doctor to do the endoscopy before it gets worse just to make sure. Best wishes and I hope you start feeling better soon. hugs, Cira

If you are truly only attempting to take in things that are appropriate for your post op stage. Then be proactive with the doctors and insist that it is not normal. That you are NOT meeting your minimum requirements. Did they rx a nausea medication for you? There are suppository forms that will work wonderfully. The more vomiting that you do, the more inflamed your pouch, intestines will become, the higher risk for development of an ulcer and/or scar tissue. good luck to you.

I agree with Cira. It really sounds like you may have a stricture and if you do this isn't something that goes away on its own. If your surgeon isn't listening contact your primary doctor if need be. Don't be affraid to go into B**** mode you know the loudest wheel gets the grease. Also they should treat you well after all YOU are the costomer and the costomer is always right epecially when it comes to knowing your own body!

Try all clear liquids for a day, while complaining to your surgeon, dehydration can be serious, it happened to my spouse. INSIST they see you! Get blood work! your new pouch my be infected, its no big deal and can easily be fixed with antibiotics but see your surgeon TODAY!

Hi Dominique, thanks for your question. It sounds like, from you question and statement, that perhaps you had tried some foods that you were too early for, but have backed off and are having problems with protein drinks? That is how I read what you said. In any event, if you are having problems keeping just fluids down, you may have a stricture, but only your surgeon can tell you if there is a problem with stricture. They have to do a physical test to figure that out. I encourage you to sip just small amounts (although I assume that you are doing that now), and log each time you sip and if it comes back up. You know already what is happening, but when you present it to your surgeon on paper, they cannot ignore the facts. If they think it is "you" and what you eat, you can prove that it is not that at all and that they need to look at the physical issues as you need nutrition. Can you take your vitamin and calcium supplement? Are they staying down? They will want to know that too. I hope you get the help you need, but it sounds like your doctor will need to check you out. Take care. Patricia P.
