Question:
Hair loss at 4 months post-op
How long does this hair loss last? I consumed 80-100 grams of proteins everyday and now my hair ifalling out by the combfull. I take biotin as well as many other hair, skin, vitamins. My anesthesiaologist said anesthesia does NOT cause hair loss. There's conflicting info out there. I did have anesthesia October 13 for some facial plastic surgery. Did this trigger hair loss that was going to happen anyway from my RNT in July? I have lost 40 pounds. Please, I welcome ANY comments here. — silverkrisi (posted on December 9, 2006)

I am 3 years out today. Up until I was told about Sci-Fit Amino 1500 I was
loosing hair in hand fulls. I turely thought I was going to be bald on
top. This amino 1500 works very well for me, take 2 a day and KNOW that I
am getting enough protein to keep my skin, hair and nails healthy... The
only place I get it in online at mysupplementstore.com. You may be able to
find it else where...but if not try this website.. Best of luck.. Kalli

I am 4+ months post op and have not lost any hair yet. Knock on wood. But
from what I read on this board and www.bariatriceating.com alot of people
do but that it grows back. I don't think it is from anesthesia but from
the shock of the surgery to your body. If you are getting in enough
protein, then my only other question would be what kind of vitamins are you
taking? Hopefully not children's. BA or Vista would be best in the
multivitamin and then of course you need calcium, B12 and iron.

Hello! Yep, welcome to the receding hairline club! LOL My hair loss started
at about 5 months and lasted about 4 months more. I was suping up on the
protein, biotin, b-complex the who kit n kaboodle, and it didn't make a
difference. I believe it's just "one of those things" that the
shock of the surgery to the body does to most of us. Hang in there and
don't freak out like I did. It will grow back once your body adjusts to
"new plumbing". LOL Good luck and thanks for sharing your journey
with us! Glori

I have been told things contribute to hair loss are shock of losing weight
so quickly, shock of lower protein consumption than you used to consume,
iron deficientcy, and anesthesia. Not everyone experiences hair loss.
From personal experience of starvation dieting years ago and now seeing
results from have WLS I believe there is some connection between lower
protein consumption and quick weight loss. Like previously posted, the
good news is the hair grows back. You wont go bald. My hair was baby fine
and extremely thin to begin with. I think hormones play part in it too.
Just my speculation.

In addition to my other post, something I thought might be coincidental or
a connection...I too did have another surgery. I had that one a month prior
to WLS. The hair loss started around 5 months out and now the new hair is
about an inch long. It has stopped falling out. I take Biotin and also
iron for an iron deficientcy and vitamin D for a vitamin D deficientcy. I
take Centrum multi vitamins also. Keep in mind the body only absorbs about
30 grams of protein at any given meal. Any extra most likely doesnt get
absorbed.
