Question:
10 years out and gaining weight back!!

I am 60 years old.. had the best 10 years of my life in my 50's- felt and looked great. In the past year, i have gained 37 pounds back!! In less than a year, actually! Was up and down before that but not near the 180 i am again. I don't want to feel horrible about myself like i did in my 40's. I have to get back on track and need someone to share my concerns..maybe a penpal. If anyone has some support, please let me know!    — samthedog98 (posted on March 31, 2011)

I had my surgery August 13, 2009, and I am so obsessive over gaining, that I weigh myself almost everyday. I lost more than I should, but I am afraid to gain any weight, even though my plastic surgeon told me to gain five lbs. Do you exercise, I walk daily for 40 minutes and try to weights 3 times a week, I use the Crunch program, if you have On Demand with your cable company it is in there under fitness. I go to a counselor for this weight business, and it helps a lot, I also go to support groups. I never WANT to be heavy again. Good luck

I can totally understand your concern. I am currently 40 pounds above my lowest weight. So, lets start from the beginning. Have you looked at your eating and exercising habits? Have you had a checkup with your doctor recently. How about bloodwork? How are all your numbers? Thyroid? First of all, I don't know what your starting weight was but surely you must still be a lot lower than that. Congratulations on your weight loss! Congratulations on 10 years! Congratulations for wanting to do something about it NOW! Sometimes we just need to hold things up to the light of day. I know for me that it is very easy to pretend I didn't gain weight. I was pretty good at it too, until none of my clothes fit anymore. With me it was a big case of complacency, no exercise and medications!! Some of my bloodwork was wonky too. So, give yourself a hug. Pick your butt up off the chair, get yourself to the doctor (if you haven't already) and get some bloodwork done. If you are doing everything right and your bloodwork is fine consider that maybe something is wrong with your new plumbing...endoscope to check pouch size and for ulcers and staple line disruptions. Hang in there! We need to be vigilant about our health. And, cheers to another decade of improved health!! Take care!

Hello there, Just wanted to tell you that I am only 2 yrs. out and I am going through the same thing. I have gained 14 lbs. since October but I know exactly why. I simply have been eating all the wrong way again and need to get back in control! Maybe we could hook up online and help each other out. I would love to do that for you, (and for me)!! You can email me at [email protected] if interested. Who knows, we could help each other get back on track. Good luck and hope to hear from you!

I can relate. I am also 10 yrs out 11 in Oct. Today is my 54 bday and I have gain back almost all the weight. I hold it all in my stomach. I had open RNY and herniated the incision down the middle of my stomach and I could never affort to get it fixed properly $10K. I thought my surgeon originally agreed to fix incision after because I had 2 (8 lb) twins prior to RNY and my abdomin was really a mess. Depressed and stuck would love to email support [email protected]

I had RNY 10/05/2009 and I have started gaining as well. I have gained 15lbs. I know what my problem is, I can eat junk better than meats/real food, or protein. I also have stopped going to the gym, but as of last week I went back. I have been so upset with myself. I went through hell to have this surgery and after surgery and now to let this happen to myself...I'm here pen pal. you can email me at [email protected]

sounds like u need a visit to your surgeon ar another one to get a revision. OR...watch what u r eating...too many of anything will make u gain. start writing down your intake and u will soon c what is happening and if u can walk or exercise a little to speed up the metabolism. hope these thoughts help...been there done this but had serious problems from original surgery! jules

I believe that we all have the fear of regaining our lost weight back. I am sorry that you are having this in your life. Have you tried to go back to protein shakes? Start the Phase 1 of the post op diet, or even the pre post diet? Are you drinking water, vitamin water? It is important to drink water, tea, etc. Go back to protein only. I am having trouble with the same 5 lbs, but cannot exercise due to a fall. Take care, Pat

hi! this is a concern for many..I am 3 yrs out..been at goal since 1o months out and have maintained unitl this past holiday season..gained 7 lbs and kind of freaked out as i saw i was heading in a direction i didnt' want to be going. What i did was look at my eating habits..i still journal...so this was easy for me. Then i went backt o basics. eat small meals, chew to smitherines, wait minutes between bits and no drinking. upped my exercise and now i am back to where i want to be. yes only 7 lbs, but i caught it early. 40 lbs or even more is not impossibke to lose. we all did it once. try to make sure you get your protein in first with every meal and get atleast 50 grams a day. cut down on carbs as they tend to make one hungrier the next day. and feel good about yourslf . A positve attitude is key to success in any venue in life. You have done a wonderful job so far. Don't let a little set back ..bring you back to where you don't want to be. One last thought, you might ask yourself why you are eating (more, or more often) or whatever the case may be...as the emotional reasons why we are fat often need to be dealt with again as we mmove on as a thinner person. I hope this ..any or all of it..is of help to you and others. Have a Blessed weekend, hugs, kim

Hello. I too am having the same problem, I had my surgery in 2003. I've gained 28 pounds. My fear is not so much the weight gain, since I have been able to lose weight if I stick to the basics. However, I can now eat a large amount of food, which really scares me. I will be happy to hear your suggestions. I do know it's a tool and I need to stop eating so much.
