Question:
Doctor has me on meal replacement protein shakes.
I am about 2 weeks pre-surgery. I'm using Advocare meal preplacment protein shakes and Slim Fast. The Advocare gives me diarrhea. I don't think I'll handle that very well post-op. Any suggestions? — Sheri2008 (posted on July 28, 2009)

Hi, My Dr had suggested Carnation instant breakfast...sugar free and it
was full of iodine which I am allerigic to soo I had to use other brands.
Many people find the brand they can tokerate and use it AS long as it has
all the protein you need. I use GNC's Essential Natural wild
strawberry, also Amplify smoothies..chocolate mint, also many different
ISOPURE already made drinks. There are many very good brands out there. I
went to GNC so I could read bottles and sample them. I have found that what
I liked before surg I do not like now. Here GNC will allow you to sample
many things they have made up. There are companies like VITA LADY that have
sample packets to order. Many of the people in my group use the VITA LADY
company and really like the products. It is trial and error I found. If you
are in a group as them if they have samples. Wish you the best..

Ive always loved the Atkins Shakes very high in protein..a lil on the
expensive side but i think they taste good and the last time I had one (its
been a couple years) they have almost 20grams of protein and its Atkins so
the carbs are low.

try switching to skim milk to help with the diarrhea too. the sugars in
the milk may be adding to that and it will be the same after surgery. I use
UNJURY Protein. you can buy online or some nutritionial centers. I also use
carn.Inst. Bfast just to have change. Remember the total protein shakes is
just for a few weeks postop. They will be to supplement when you have a low
protein day after that. THis too shall soon pass. Protein shakes after
surgery are to help your stomach and intestines heal from the major surgery
you are having as well. To eat food right away would cause major problems.
I am 4 weeks postop. I hope this helped.

My doctor put me on meal replacement shakes to help with weight loss to get
approved. They had me drink 3 to 4 EAS shakes a day. I bought AdvantEDGE
CARB CONTROL which have 17 grams of high quility of protein and 2g net
carbs. You can get them at walmart or many other stores. I went to SAMs
culb and got 24 for about $21.00. So that would be about 88 cents per meal
that not to bad. I got the chocolate fudge flavor and they taste great.
Check them out. I hope this helps.
